Fresh details emerging from the attack on Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State have painted an even grimmer picture of the bandits' reign of terror, with reports confirming that the assailants killed two additional residents in neighbouring villages, abducted young boys and girls, and kidnapped a local vigilante whose weapon was stolen. The attack, which occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2026, has sent shockwaves through the region, exposing the growing vulnerability of communities in Kebbe LGA.
According to local sources, the bandits did not stop at the initial assault on Girkau. They also struck Dukura and Jabga, both within Girkau Ward, killing one person in each village. Two other residents sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment. The attackers also abducted several residents, including young boys and girls, in a chilling escalation that suggests the bandits are now targeting children for ransom or recruitment. A vigilante was also taken captive, and the attackers made off with his locally made gun, further arming themselves for future attacks. In addition, a large number of cattle were rustled, dealing a devastating blow to the livelihoods of the affected families.
The latest attack comes just days after bandits reportedly imposed a N40 million levy on Kebbe town, threatening to kill residents and burn the community if the money was not paid. The abduction of young boys and girls is particularly alarming, as it suggests a shift in the bandits' tactics, targeting the most vulnerable members of society for exploitation.
The Sokoto State Government and security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the latest developments. However, residents have expressed growing frustration over the government's inability to protect them, with many calling for urgent military intervention to flush out the bandits from their hideouts. The African Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Sokoto, Hon. Manir Muhammad Dan'iya, has described the situation as "grave" and urged both the state and Federal Governments to take immediate action. "What has happened to those promises? What has the APC Government in Sokoto done differently to stop bandits from dictating terms to our communities?" he asked.
As the people of Girkau, Dukura, Jabga, and surrounding communities mourn their dead and fear for the safety of their abducted loved ones, the question remains: how many more communities must be attacked before the government takes decisive action to end the cycle of violence that has turned Kebbe LGA into a killing field?
