Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has launched a scathing attack on the administration of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of deliberately planning the killings that devastated Southern Kaduna and creating deep, toxic divisions that left the region in lasting pain. Musa made the explosive allegations on Thursday, September 3, 2026, during an interview on Channels Television's Politics Today, where he painted a stark contrast between El-Rufai's tenure and the ongoing efforts of the current governor, Uba Sani, to heal the wounds.
The Defence Minister did not mince words, stating that the people of Southern Kaduna remain deeply aggrieved and traumatised by the scale of violence that occurred under El-Rufai's watch. "We can never be happy with somebody who has deliberately planned for the killing of our people," Musa declared. He alleged that the former governor's administration fostered a climate of fear and segregation, where residents from the southern part of the state could not freely live in the north, effectively dividing the state into two hostile regions. "El-Rufai did a lot of terrible things in Kaduna State. He divided the state into two," Musa said.
Musa credited Governor Uba Sani with making deliberate and significant efforts to dismantle the division and restore a sense of unity and freedom of movement among residents. "You see now, everybody is free. Everybody has a say," he remarked, though he cautioned that the healing process was not yet 100 percent complete. The minister described the security situation in Southern Kaduna as vastly improved, noting that the number of killings under the current administration "could not be compared" with the bloodshed witnessed during El-Rufai's tenure.
In a further escalation of his accusations, Musa claimed that El-Rufai had openly boasted about his actions, including paying bandits. "He told us he paid bandits. He told us he did this, he did that. He didn't hide it. He was that arrogant to come out and tell people that this was what he did," Musa alleged. He also accused the former governor of using his power to settle personal scores, alleging that he would send bulldozers to demolish the homes of people with whom he had disagreements.
Despite the harsh criticism, Musa clarified that he does not regard El-Rufai as an enemy but rather as a "misguided" politician. He stressed that his comments were not driven by his Kaduna origin but by his identity as a Nigerian concerned about the nation's unity. The Defence Minister called on Nigerians to reject politicians who exploit religion, ethnicity, and other differences for personal gain. "We should get politicians that want to unite Nigeria. For me, any individual who is using either religion, tribe, creed, or anything to divide the state can never be a friend; can never be somebody we look up to," he declared. As of the time of the reports, El-Rufai's family and media team had not publicly responded to the allegations.
