The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 22 suspects, comprising 10 women and 12 men, over an alleged attempt to organise an illegal event in the state, marking another significant crackdown in the state's ongoing enforcement of Shari'ah-based moral regulations. The Deputy Commander-General of the board, Dr. Mujahedeen Aminudeen, disclosed this to newsmen on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in his office in Kano, confirming that the suspects were apprehended in different parts of the state, including Zoo Road and Court Road, following complaints from residents.
According to Aminudeen, preliminary investigations indicated that most of the suspects were allegedly involved in drug abuse. He further revealed that the 12 male suspects included some who were allegedly effeminate, while the 10 women were suspected to be sex workers. He also added that most of those arrested had entered Kano from other states, suggesting a coordinated effort to bring illicit activities into the state.
The Deputy Commander-General said investigations into the matter were ongoing and that the suspects would be prosecuted before a court of competent jurisdiction. He issued a stern warning to people planning to come to Kano to engage in illegal activities and immoral practices, stating that Hisbah officers were ready to arrest and prosecute offenders. "We will not tolerate acts of immorality in Kano," Aminudeen reiterated, adding that the board would intensify its crackdown on such practices.
Aminudeen also urged parents to take proper responsibility for the upbringing of their children to ensure that they develop good character that would facilitate a better future. The arrests are part of the Hisbah Board's ongoing efforts to enforce moral and social order in Kano State, which operates under Shari'ah law. The board has a history of conducting raids on hotels and event centres suspected of hosting immoral activities, including cross-dressing, prostitution, and the consumption of alcohol.
The suspects remain in custody pending the conclusion of investigations, and the board has warned that anyone found guilty will face the full wrath of the law. The arrests have drawn mixed reactions from the public, with some commending the board for upholding moral standards and others questioning the legality and scope of the board's enforcement powers. Nonetheless, the Hisbah Board has made it clear that it will not relent in its efforts to rid Kano of what it considers immoral and illegal activities.
