Tragedy struck the Ife-Ilesa Expressway in Osun State on Saturday, September 5, 2026, when a head-on collision between a Toyota Hiace bus and a Volkswagen Golf car claimed three lives and left about 20 others injured. The Federal Road Safety Corps, Osun Sector Command, confirmed the incident, which occurred at Tonkere town, a notorious stretch of the highway that has witnessed several fatal accidents in the past.
The Osun Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Sunday Adebayo, who confirmed the casualty figures, disclosed that the accident involved 23 people: 11 females, nine males, and three children – two boys and a girl. He revealed that the deceased comprised two females and one male, while the remaining 20 sustained varying degrees of injury. "Three people died. We have about 20 others who were injured in the accident," Adebayo stated. The FRSC patrol teams from Ife and Ilesa were deployed to the scene about five minutes after the crash was reported.
According to the FRSC commander, preliminary findings indicated that speeding and dangerous driving were the primary causes of the crash. "There was no need for such an accident on the road if Nigerians can change their attitude. Excessive speeding is killing. The accident happened due to over-speeding and dangerous driving," Adebayo said. He urged motorists to exercise caution, adding that lower speeds could significantly reduce the severity of injuries and fatalities during accidents.
The injured victims were evacuated to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, and the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, also located in Ife, for medical attention. The remains of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesa. The two vehicles involved were moved to the nearest police station, and the highway was cleared for normal traffic flow.
The sector commander appealed to motorists to recognise their shared responsibility towards other road users, noting that road safety is a collective duty. "If you go at a lower speed, if you have cause to be involved in a crash, the fatality will not be as much as what we saw this morning," Adebayo said. He assured residents that the corps would sustain its public enlightenment campaigns and road safety initiatives across the state to reduce road accidents and prevent avoidable deaths.
