The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested 10 suspected vandals in separate operations across Kubwa, Wuye, and the National Mosque area of Abuja, dealing a significant blow to criminal networks targeting critical public infrastructure in the nation's capital. The arrests, disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday, September 6, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, were part of sustained efforts by the command to protect government assets and public utilities.
According to the statement, a police patrol team from Kubwa Division, while on routine patrol around Bazango-Kubwa at about 6:00 p.m. on September 2, 2026, sighted five persons allegedly vandalising armoured cables. The suspects were identified as Goodname Oriarebun, 29; Timothy Donald, 28; Ayo Buli, 26; Emmanuel Elijah, 28; and Christian David, 28. The command said Oriarebun is from Gishiri, Mabushi; Donald from Arab Road, Kubwa; Buli from Gishiri, Mabushi; Elijah from Shelter Farm, Byazhin, Kubwa; and David from Kabba, Kagini, Abuja. In a separate operation, a patrol team from Wuye Division arrested one Moses Luka while allegedly digging out armoured cables along the road between Magic Land and the National Stadium in Abuja.
The police also said a surveillance team from Wuse Division arrested four other suspects around the National Mosque area after they allegedly cut down a solar-powered street light in an attempt to vandalise it and remove its components. The suspects were identified as Musa Abdullahi, Suleiman Idris, Aliyu Isa, and Muhammed Abdulrahman. According to the police, a combined total of approximately 70 kilogrammes of armoured cables was recovered from the suspects, along with the solar panel, battery, and other parts of the street light.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, commended the police teams for their vigilance and timely intervention in protecting public infrastructure across the FCT. The police command said investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected vandalism syndicates, including those allegedly involved in receiving stolen public infrastructure. All suspects remain in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The command also warned that anyone found culpable would face the full wrath of the law, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding public assets.
The arrests come amid growing concerns over the persistent vandalism of public infrastructure in the FCT and other parts of the country. In a related development, the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, called on citizens to take ownership of public assets and report any suspicious activities to security agencies. The NSCDC boss also warned that the Corps would intensify its fight against infrastructure vandalism and ensure that perpetrators were brought to justice.
The successful operations in Kubwa, Wuye, and the National Mosque area demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the importance of public cooperation in protecting critical infrastructure. As the investigations continue, the police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station. The message from the FCT Police Command is clear: the days of vandals operating with impunity in Abuja are numbered, and those who seek to destroy public assets will be caught and prosecuted.
