The Nigerian Navy has recorded another major victory in its ongoing battle against crude oil theft, uncovering a large dugout reservoir containing approximately 10,000 litres of a substance suspected to be stolen crude oil in the Oteghele general area of Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State. The discovery was made on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA during a targeted anti-crude oil theft operation conducted within its area of operations. According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation followed credible intelligence regarding suspected illicit petroleum activities in the area.
NNS DELTA, under the command of Commodore Shehu Tasiu, executed the operation with precision. The large dugout reservoir and its contents were subsequently handled in accordance with established procedures, effectively preventing the suspected stolen crude oil from being further utilised for illicit activities. The Navy said the operation was part of sustained efforts to deny criminal operators access to crude oil and the infrastructure used to facilitate its illegal exploitation. It added that the operation was in line with the strategic directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to protect critical national infrastructure within Nigeria's territorial waters.
The discovery in the Oteghele area represents a significant disruption to the network of economic saboteurs who have long plagued the Niger Delta region, contributing to substantial revenue losses for the country. The Nigerian Navy has continued to intensify intelligence-driven operations across the maritime environment and the Niger Delta, aimed at protecting the nation's oil and gas assets while supporting economic stability and national security. As the Navy sustains its pressure on illegal oil bunkering networks, the message is clear: the days of impunity for oil thieves in the Niger Delta are numbered.
