The Kaduna State Vigilance Service has lost one of its most senior commanders in a brutal attack by suspected bandits, who killed the deputy commander and two of his men in the Kubau axis of Kaduna State on Sunday night, September 6, 2026. The incident, which occurred in Zuntu town, Kubau Local Government Area, has plunged the local security community into mourning and raised urgent questions about the safety of vigilantes who are often the first line of defence against criminal gangs in rural communities.

According to an OSINT source monitoring security developments in the region, the deputy commander was killed alongside two other vigilantes during the attack. The source, identified as Usman, disclosed the development on Monday, stating in a post: "The KADVS deputy commander in Zuntu town, Kubau axis, Kaduna State, has fallen. The vigilantes commander was killed by bandits along with two of his men last night". He added a prayer for the deceased, saying, "Allah ya jikansa da rahama," meaning "May Allah have mercy on his soul".

The Kubau axis has been a recurrent flashpoint for bandit activity. In June 2026, KADVS personnel reportedly intercepted and arrested a group of suspected bandits along the Ikara–Zuntu route in Kubau. In a separate operation, the Kaduna State Vigilance Service was also reported to have captured eight suspected armed bandits in Kubau during a midnight surveillance operation. Despite these successes, the latest attack underscores the persistent vulnerability of security personnel tasked with protecting communities in Kaduna State, where bandits have continued to operate with impunity.

The killing of the deputy commander and two vigilantes is a significant blow to the Kaduna State Vigilance Service, which has been a critical partner to security agencies in maintaining peace and stability in the state. The vigilantes, often drawn from local communities, risk their lives daily to protect their neighbours from bandit attacks, but their sacrifices are frequently met with inadequate support and protection from the state. The government and security agencies are now under intense pressure to intensify operations in Kubau and bring the perpetrators to justice. As the community mourns the loss of its protectors, the question remains: what more must be done to safeguard the lives of those who risk everything to keep others safe?
