At least 11 people have been killed and several others are missing following a brutal early-morning attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Zaranga village in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State. The attack, which occurred on Monday, September 7, 2026, saw the terrorists storm the community while residents were still asleep, shooting sporadically and setting houses ablaze.
A resident of the village, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told journalists that 11 bodies had so far been recovered from the scene. "For now, 11 dead bodies have been recovered. Many people are still missing. Search teams and security personnel are in the forest searching for the missing people," the resident said. Another resident, whose wife and two other family members were among those killed, recounted the horror of the invasion. "My wife and two of my family members were also killed during the early morning invasion of my village," he said.
The attackers reportedly invaded the village in the early hours of Monday, shooting indiscriminately and setting houses on fire. The assault has left the community in mourning, with residents and security personnel still searching for those unaccounted for. Zaranga village, located in Gombi LGA, has previously experienced attacks linked to insurgent activities in Nigeria's North-East region.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Adamawa State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, did not respond to repeated calls and messages seeking confirmation of the incident. The exact number of people missing and the extent of property destroyed in the attack remained unclear.
As search teams continue to comb nearby forests for missing residents, the attack has renewed concerns over the safety of rural communities in Gombi and other parts of Adamawa State, where residents remain vulnerable to attacks by insurgents and other armed groups.
