The Cross River State Police Command has launched a manhunt for a male guest who allegedly fled after a woman was found dead with injuries to her face and neck in a hotel room in Calabar, the state capital. The incident occurred at a hotel on Clifford Street in Calabar South Local Government Area, throwing the community into shock and raising fresh concerns over the safety of hotel guests in the state.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, the hotel's director, manager and receptionist reported the case to the police at about 8 a.m. on Monday, September 8, 2026. Preliminary investigations revealed that an unidentified male guest checked into Room 2 on Sunday night, September 7, with a female companion whose identity is yet to be established. The police noted that the man was allegedly not properly documented at the point of admission.
The receptionist reportedly discovered the woman's body in the early hours of Monday after noticing that the door to the room was open. Believing the occupants had checked out, he entered the room to switch off the ceiling fan. "Upon switching on the light, he reportedly discovered the female guest lying unresponsive on the bed," the statement read. Investigators who visited the scene observed apparent marks of violence on the victim's face and neck. Her body has been deposited at the General Hospital, Calabar mortuary, pending an autopsy.
Some tablets were recovered from the woman's handbag and secured as exhibits, though police have not established any connection between the drugs and her death at this stage. The hotel receptionist has been detained to assist with the investigation, but the police clarified that his detention should not be seen as proof that he committed any offence. The Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, CP Geoffrey Ordue, has directed a full and transparent investigation into the incident. Efforts to trace the male guest and identify the deceased are ongoing.
As the investigation continues, residents and hotel operators are calling for stricter documentation of guests to prevent such tragedies. The police have urged anyone with information about the identity or whereabouts of the male guest to come forward.
