Five suspected terrorists have been arrested following an attack on a military camp in Igbeti, Oyo State. The attackers, dressed in military uniforms and armed with grenade launchers, stormed the base of the Joint Security Taskforce, codenamed Operation Burst, along the Igbeti-Igboho Road in Olorunsogo Local Government Area at about 5 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026.
The attackers opened fire on the personnel stationed at the camp. The grenade launchers ignited cooking gas cylinders on the premises, causing a fire that destroyed a patrol vehicle and a building. The security personnel fought back and repelled the assault. No lives were lost on the security side.
The Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Bayo Lawal, visited Igbeti on Monday, September 14, 2026, to assess the situation. He was conducted around the scene by the Commanding Officer of the 81 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Innocent Asogwa. Lawal confirmed that five of the attackers had been arrested. They were captured wearing military uniforms. More arrests were expected.
The military has deployed at least 120 soldiers into the bush to track down the fleeing attackers. The state's surveillance aircraft are also being used for reconnaissance operations. Lawal explained that the aircraft cannot remain permanently in the sky but will be available for security operations whenever required.
An emergency committee comprising the chairmen of five adjoining local government areas has been established to coordinate support for security personnel. The committee will identify the needs of the security forces and liaise with the state government to ensure prompt assistance. Lawal said the government would provide the necessary support to rebuild and fortify the security post.
The attack is part of a broader pattern of violence in the Oke-Ogun region, where armed groups have repeatedly targeted security personnel and communities. The Igbeti-Igboho axis, in particular, has been a recurring target because of its proximity to the Old Oyo National Park, which provides cover for criminal elements.
The Oyo State Government has urged residents and traditional rulers to collaborate with security agencies. Lawal warned that individuals harbouring or aiding criminal elements would face the full weight of the law. He also cautioned those involved in illegal mining activities in the area to desist.
The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State described the attack as a security lapse under Governor Makinde's administration. The government dismissed the criticism, insisting that the security response to the attack demonstrates its commitment to protecting residents. As the 120 soldiers continue their pursuit through the bush, the people of Igbeti are hoping that the arrests and the deployment will bring an end to the attacks.
