Lagos Monitors School Resumption Across Public Schools as 2026/2027 Academic Session Begins

The Lagos State Government has commenced a high-level monitoring exercise across public schools to ensure a smooth start to the 2026/2027 academic session, with the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, and the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, leading the charge from separate locations across the state. The exercise, which began on Monday, September 14, 2026, focused on school preparedness, staff and student attendance, and the commencement of teaching and learning activities, according to a statement issued by the Ministry's Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Basirat Lawal.

Alli-Balogun led a monitoring team to Keke Senior High School in Agege, where he inspected the school environment and engaged directly with teachers and administrators. In a move that underscored the government's determination to enforce discipline and accountability in the school system, the Commissioner conducted a surprise roll call of teachers to check attendance and compliance with expected standards of discipline. He expressed satisfaction over the large turnout of students and teachers, describing it as evidence that the state's preparations for the new session had yielded results. The Commissioner stressed the importance of punctuality, discipline, effective teaching and learning, as well as maintaining a safe and conducive environment for students. "It is very important for you to be focused, read ahead of the class, engage your teachers by asking questions and participate in all positive things that happen in school," he advised the students. "Learn to build a good foundation and better future for yourselves." He also urged school personnel to remain committed to delivering quality education and ensuring that every learner receives the attention and support required to excel.

In a simultaneous exercise, Dokunmu-Adegbite, accompanied by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Eniola Opeyemi, monitored resumption activities at the Government Technical and Vocational College in Agidingbi and Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Grammar School in Ojodu. During the visits, the Permanent Secretary assessed the readiness of the schools, reviewed staff and student attendance, and engaged with school management and parents on the commencement of academic activities. She commended teachers and school administrators for their dedication and encouraged them to maintain professionalism. "Don't join any bad group, learn from your mates that know better than you," she advised students. "Never stop learning, any skill you like to acquire, give it your best." The Permanent Secretary also admonished parents to live up to their responsibilities and remain actively involved in their children's lives, noting that parental support remained critical to the growth and development of students.

To ensure statewide coverage, the ministry deployed all its directors on Grade Level 15 and above across various local government areas to provide real-time assessments of student and staff attendance, as well as the commencement of academic activities. The 2026/2027 session officially began on Monday, September 14, 2026, under the state's harmonised academic calendar for public and private schools. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening educational standards, supporting school administrators, and providing Lagos students with a conducive environment for quality learning.
