A mother and her children were burnt to death in the early hours of Friday when a fire engulfed their residence in Okochiri community, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, in a tragedy that has left the community grieving and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the inferno.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, who said a woman and three of her children lost their lives in the fire. Agabe also disclosed that other occupants of the building sustained injuries, while property worth thousands of naira was destroyed. She said an investigation had begun to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the incident. "Yes, there was a fire incident in which a woman and her three children tragically lost their lives, while others sustained injuries," Agabe said. "Property estimated at thousands of naira was also destroyed in the inferno. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the cause of the fire outbreak".
However, accounts from community sources and the Civilian Joint Task Force in Okrika suggested a higher toll. The Commander of the CJTF in Okrika, Igwe Godswill, who was among the first responders at the scene, said when he and his team arrived, they found the bodies of about four children and their mother, making a total of five persons. "There are no proper details as to what happened," Godswill said. "But when we got there, we saw that about four children and their mother, a total of five persons, were burnt and died." He added that local youths had extinguished the fire before his arrival, though the victims were believed to have died before the flames were put out. "It is so disheartening that this is happening again in our community," he said.
The discrepancy in the number of children has not been resolved, with the police maintaining that three children died while community sources and first responders say four. The Cable reported that residents said community youths mobilised to put out the fire but could not save the victims, who were burnt beyond recognition. Channels Television also reported that the fire was put out through the efforts of youths in the community before the police arrived at the scene.
The cause of the fire has not been independently verified, but multiple accounts point to petrol as the likely trigger. A source who spoke on condition of anonymity told Punch that the incident occurred when an individual attempted to discharge petrol into a jerrycan, causing the product to ignite. The source added that the petrol was suspected to be bad fuel. Sources in the community told Channels Television that the fire might have been caused by petrol ignited by a spark. Daily Trust reported that neighbours said the fire was caused by petrol which was ignited by a spark, though the claim has yet to be verified. The CJTF commander also called for an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident. "I believe a proper investigation will be carried out," Godswill said. The incident is being handled by the police at the Okrika Police Station, according to Channels Television.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about fire safety in Rivers State, where similar incidents have claimed lives in recent years. In November 2025, two siblings were burnt to death following a fire outbreak that destroyed properties worth millions of naira at the Rumuola axis of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. In January 2025, an eight-month-old baby was feared dead following a fire that gutted two self-contained buildings in Obio/Akpor. The recurrence of such incidents has prompted calls for greater public awareness about fire prevention, particularly in communities where petrol is handled and stored in residential areas.
For the people of Okochiri, Friday's tragedy is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the dangers that lurk in the most ordinary routines. A family that went to sleep on Thursday night did not wake up on Friday morning. The community youths who rushed to the scene did what they could, but the flames had already done their worst. The police have taken over the investigation, and the bodies of the victims have been recovered. What remains are the questions: how did the fire start, could it have been prevented, and will the investigation bring answers to a community that has lost a mother and her children in the most harrowing circumstances.
