A mother and three of her children have died in a fire that swept through a residential building in Okochiri community, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, leaving other occupants injured and destroying property in the latest deadly fire incident reported in the state.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, September 18, 2026, at Okochiri community in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that a woman and three children died in the inferno, while other occupants sustained injuries. The police also said property worth thousands of naira was destroyed and that an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances and cause of the fire.
The incident was discovered after the fire had already taken hold of the building. Igwe Godswill, Commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Okrika, said he and members of his team went to the scene after receiving information about the fire and found the charred remains of the victims. He said local youths had succeeded in extinguishing the flames before his team arrived.
Godswill initially said community members had reported that about five people, including a mother and four children, had died. However, the Rivers State Police Command subsequently clarified that four people were confirmed dead: the mother and three of her children. The discrepancy in the early accounts underscores why officials are relying on the ongoing investigation to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe confirmed the deaths and said other occupants of the building were injured. She added that significant property was destroyed by the fire. According to the police, investigators are working to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the outbreak.
The cause of the fire had not been officially established as of Friday. A source cited in media reports alleged that the incident may have started when petrol was being transferred into a jerrycan and the fuel caught fire. The source further suggested that the petrol might have been contaminated or of poor quality. However, that account had not been independently established and was not presented by police as the confirmed cause.
The distinction is important because investigations into fatal fires often require examination of the building, electrical installations, fuel or other combustible materials and the circumstances immediately before the outbreak. Until investigators complete that process, no particular explanation can be treated as the established cause of the Okochiri fire.
The building itself was reportedly severely damaged by the inferno, with parts of the roof and other sections affected. A video from the scene reviewed by local media showed the extent of the destruction and the difficult conditions inside the affected structure. The damage has also raised concerns about the safety of other occupants who may have been living in the same building.
The tragedy has caused distress within Okochiri, a community in the riverine Okrika area of Rivers State. Local residents and youth members were involved in efforts to bring the fire under control before security personnel arrived. Another deadly fire was reported in 2022 at Rumuchakara village in Choba, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, where three children died after a fire affected several buildings. That incident was reportedly linked by local sources to a candle that had been left burning, although the circumstances differed from those surrounding the latest Okochiri tragedy.
The repeated occurrence of fatal fires has made prevention and public awareness important issues for communities across Rivers State. Safe storage and handling of petrol and other flammable substances, proper electrical installations, functioning fire extinguishers and unobstructed emergency access can reduce risks, although the specific factors involved in each incident must be established separately.
For the families affected in Okochiri, however, the immediate concern is the loss of four members of one household. The deaths of a mother and her children have left relatives and community members mourning while investigators work to establish exactly what happened before the fire began.
The police have not announced any arrest or identified anyone as responsible for the incident. There has also been no official determination that the fire was deliberately started. The incident therefore remains both a family tragedy and a matter for public safety authorities. Establishing the cause will be essential not only for the bereaved family seeking answers but also for determining whether any preventable safety failure contributed to the deaths.
