A woman in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, Bilkisu Sani, has been arrested by the police over the alleged killing of her husband, Hafizu Gausu, following a dispute over his plans to marry a second wife. The incident occurred on Friday evening, September 18, 2026, at about 7 p.m. in the Katsalle area of Rogo town, according to residents and police sources.
A resident of the area, Auwal Kazagi Rogo, told Daily Trust that residents rushed to the scene after hearing cries from Bilkisu, who reportedly raised an alarm that her husband had been slaughtered. "On reaching there, we saw that he was not slaughtered but hit on the head with an object. He fell in blood and died. There was even a sign of bite on his ear," Kazagi said. The police were immediately alerted, and officers later evacuated the body for investigation. Gausu was buried on Saturday morning in Rogo in accordance with Islamic rites.
According to Kazagi, the deceased had recently become engaged to another woman and was planning to marry her as his second wife. The plan had led to repeated arguments between the couple, with Bilkisu allegedly vowing to stop the marriage. Elders had earlier intervened in the dispute, but the disagreement continued. Sources in the area said Gausu had even asked his fiancée's family to move the wedding date forward by two months because of the opposition from his wife.
The couple had been married for nearly seven years and had two children. Bilkisu is also reportedly pregnant with the deceased's child. The police have arrested Bilkisu as the prime suspect and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her husband's death. The Police Public Relations Officer for the Kano State Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, could not be reached for comment as of the time of filing this report. However, a police source confirmed that the suspect was in custody and that investigations were ongoing.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Rogo community and raised fresh concerns about the prevalence of domestic violence and the tensions that can arise in polygamous arrangements. While Islamic law permits a man to marry up to four wives, the decision to take a second wife often becomes a source of conflict within the first marriage, particularly when the first wife is not consulted or does not consent. For the family of Hafizu Gausu, the tragedy is compounded by the fact that he leaves behind two young children and a wife who is pregnant with his child. The children have lost their father, and their mother now faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise when disputes within families are not resolved through dialogue, mediation, and, where necessary, the intervention of professional counsellors and religious leaders.
The police investigation will seek to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to Gausu's death. The suspect has not yet been formally charged, and she is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. However, the evidence gathered so far, including the account of the resident who was among the first to arrive at the scene, suggests that the incident was the culmination of a prolonged and bitter dispute over the husband's plan to take a second wife.
