The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, for allegedly murdering his girlfriend and concealing her decomposing remains inside the toilet of his apartment in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu. The suspect was arrested on Monday, September 21, 2026, after neighbours discovered the body following an offensive odour emanating from his apartment.
According to the command's spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division at about 6:30 p.m. The deceased was identified only as Chinyere, while police said efforts were ongoing to establish her surname, age and address and trace her relatives. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly killed the woman on September 19, wrapped her remains in nylon and locked them inside the toilet. The offensive odour of the decomposing body subsequently attracted neighbours, who forced the door open and apprehended him before the arrival of the police. The remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed that the incident occurred following an argument between him and the deceased over allegations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus. According to the police, Emmanuel told investigators that during the argument, he struck Chinyere on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death. He allegedly said he subsequently wrapped her remains and dumped them inside the toilet.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the incident. The police commissioner also directed that the suspect be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations. Giwa further cautioned members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution about whom they visit or spend time with and to keep trusted relatives or friends informed of their movements. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
