The Ogun State Police Command has commenced a documentation and verification exercise for all Supernumerary Police personnel operating in the state, setting a September 23, 2026, start date and an October 7, 2026, deadline for all affected officers to comply. The exercise, described by the command as proactive, is aimed at strengthening the proper documentation, verification and oversight of SPY personnel across Ogun State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the command's Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command directed all organisations with SPY personnel to ensure that their officers report to the Police Public Relations Department at the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for the exercise. Personnel are required to present their training certificates and photocopies, warrant cards or certificates of "To Whom It May Concern," recent passport photographs in approved uniform, and other relevant documents.
The command said the exercise would ensure effective monitoring and accountability of SPY operations in the state. SPY personnel are privately employed officers who are trained by the Nigeria Police Force and deployed to provide security for organisations, businesses and individuals. They operate under the regulatory oversight of the police but are not part of the regular Force.
The documentation exercise comes amid broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to regulate the operations of Supernumerary Police personnel across the country. In 2024, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, relaunched standardized uniforms and kits for SPY personnel, directing all organisations utilising their services to strictly adhere to the new standards. The initiative was part of efforts to ensure that SPY officers are properly identified and that their operations are conducted in line with established regulations.
The Ogun State Police Command's decision to verify and document all SPY personnel in the state is a continuation of that regulatory push. The command has not disclosed the total number of SPY personnel operating in Ogun State or whether any have been found operating without proper documentation. It has also not indicated what consequences, if any, will follow for personnel or organisations that fail to meet the October 7 deadline.
For organisations that employ SPY personnel, the exercise represents a compliance requirement that must be met within the two-week window. For the officers themselves, it is an opportunity to regularise their status and ensure that their credentials are properly documented. The command's directive is clear: all SPY personnel must report to Eleweran with the required documents before the deadline. The coming weeks will reveal the level of compliance and whether the exercise achieves its stated objective of strengthening oversight and accountability in the operations of Supernumerary Police in Ogun State.
