The Nigerian entertainment industry has produced some of the country's most recognisable faces, figures whose names evoke memories of iconic films, hit songs and unforgettable performances. For a significant number of them, however, the trajectory that began on the screen or the stage has taken a turn toward the pulpit. From veteran actors who spent decades portraying villains and heartthrobs to musicians and comedians who once dominated the airwaves, a growing list of Nigerian celebrities have answered what many describe as a divine calling, transitioning into pastoral ministry, evangelism and gospel work while some continue to balance both worlds.
The phenomenon is neither new nor isolated. It reflects a broader cultural dynamic in Nigeria, where faith occupies a central place in public life and where entertainers, having achieved fame and influence, often find themselves drawn to spiritual leadership. For some, the transition is total, an abandonment of the entertainment career for full-time ministry. For others, it is a blending of two callings, a recognition that storytelling, whether through film, music or comedy, can be a vehicle for spiritual instruction. What unites them is a shared conviction that the platform they built in entertainment was, in retrospect, preparation for a higher purpose.
Perhaps the most recognisable of the group is Zack Orji, a veteran actor and former President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, who built a reputation for portraying authoritative figures, including pastors, in Nollywood films. Orji was ordained as a full-time evangelist at the Christian Central Chapel International and has since been actively engaged in evangelical work across Nigeria. His transition surprised few who had followed his career, given the moral authority he often brought to his roles. Alongside him stands Kanayo O. Kanayo, the veteran actor who became famous for playing money ritualists in Nollywood, a paradox that makes his role as a preacher at Christ Mission Worldwide Church in Egbeda, Lagos, all the more striking. In real life, Kanayo teaches the moral opposite of the characters he portrayed on screen.
Eucharia Anunobi, known for her high-profile roles in Glamour Girls and Abuja Connection, was ordained as an evangelist on February 5, 2012, at the Fresh Oil Ministry Church in Egbeda, Lagos, by Pastor Psalm Okpe. She has consistently maintained that being a pastor does not preclude her from acting, and she counsels young people and teaches the word of God as she travels. Jimmy Odukoya, an actor and musician, serves as the Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, succeeding his late father, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya. His journey reflects the intersection of entertainment and ministry, as he continues to embrace both his acting career and pastoral duties.
Patience Ozokwor, the veteran actress famous for her wicked stepmother and mother-in-law roles, has increasingly embraced her faith in recent years. In 2019, she was seen ministering at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Alaba, Lagos, and has spoken extensively about her personal encounter with Jesus Christ. Banky W, the musician, actor and politician, embraced a pastoral role at This Present House Church in 2020, founded by Pastor Tony Rapu. His social media pages reflect his shift toward faith-based messages, and he continues to release gospel music alongside his preaching. Liz Benson, a Nollywood icon who began her acting career as a child, found her purpose in ministry and was ordained as a pastor in 2009.
Pat Attah, once considered one of Nollywood's heartthrobs, has embraced evangelism, using social media platforms to preach to a global audience from his base in Hamburg, Germany. Charles Okafor, a veteran actor who has been less active in the film industry in recent years, has dedicated more time to evangelism, spreading the gospel through his teachings and preaching. Yul Edochie, the controversial Nollywood actor turned pastor, has become one of the more visible figures in the celebrity-to-pulpit pipeline, frequently sharing sermons and faith-based content with his large online following. Sylvester Madu became a pastor in 2018 at Christ Embassy, while Tonto Dikeh, the actress and philanthropist, launched a Christian prayer ministry in Abuja in 2026, a move that drew both praise and scrutiny.
Jumoke Odetola, the Yoruba actress, announced in September 2026 that she is entering a new chapter of her life dedicated to Christian ministry, declaring, "I am now a minister of God. I am now a preacher of the gospel." Seun Osigbesan, known for her role as Jennifer in the popular sitcom Jenifa's Diary, was ordained as a pastor at the Gracemade Christian Centre in Lagos. Larry Koldsweat, a veteran actor, was ordained a pastor in 2012 by the late Bishop Lawrence Osagie of Powerline Bible Church, Lagos. Woli Arole, the comedian and content creator, answered the call to ministry after establishing himself as one of Nigeria's most recognisable comic acts, recounting his accomplishments in entertainment before embracing his new role. MC Abbey, another popular comedian and event compere, founded his own ministry, Destiny Ways International Ministry, transitioning from the stage to the pulpit. Femi Branch, the veteran actor and filmmaker, revealed that he is an ordained pastor, saying his religious life is an aspect of his personality that has largely remained outside the public eye.
The reasons behind these transitions vary. Some describe a gradual spiritual awakening, a sense that their success in entertainment was incomplete without a deeper purpose. Others speak of dramatic encounters with God, moments of crisis that redirected the course of their lives. For many, the decision was not a rejection of entertainment but an extension of it, a recognition that their platform and storytelling abilities could be used to spread a message they considered more important than fame or fortune. The phenomenon is not without its critics, who question the sincerity of some transitions or express concern that celebrity pastors may commercialise the gospel. Others welcome the development, seeing in it evidence that even those who have achieved worldly success can find fulfilment in service to a higher calling.
The list is neither exhaustive nor static. New names emerge with each passing year as more entertainers announce their entry into ministry, and some who have already made the transition continue to operate in both worlds, acting in films while preaching on Sundays. For Nigerians who grew up watching these figures on screen, their transformation into pastors, evangelists and ministers is a reminder that lives can change in unexpected ways, and that the call to faith, when it comes, can be heard even in the loudest corners of the entertainment industry. As Jumoke Odetola put it, she is entering a new season with God. For the 18 figures on this list, that season has already begun.
