The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the alleged rape of a 70-year-old woman in Igueben, Edo State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed the arrest on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, during a press briefing on the command’s operational activities and achievements recorded during the past week.
Ikoedem, who spoke on behalf of the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, said the suspect was currently in police custody while investigation into the allegation continued.
The police spokesperson described sexual violence as a continuing concern and confirmed that the alleged victim in the latest case is 70 years old.
“Regrettably, sexual violence remains a serious concern,” Ikoedem said.
She confirmed that the command had a 37-year-old male suspect in custody in connection with the alleged rape in Igueben.
The police did not publicly disclose the identity of the suspect during the briefing.
The identity of the 70-year-old woman has also been withheld.
Available information from the police did not provide details about when the alleged rape occurred, where precisely within Igueben it happened or the circumstances leading to the suspect’s arrest.
The command has therefore limited its public disclosure at this stage to confirmation of the allegation, the ages of the suspect and alleged victim, the location of the reported offence and the continuing investigation.
Ikoedem said investigators were thoroughly examining the case before further action would be taken.
“The case is being thoroughly investigated, and the suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law upon conclusion of investigation,” she said.
The statement means the 37-year-old remains a suspect and has not been convicted of the alleged offence.
Police investigation will be expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegation and determine the evidence available before the case proceeds to prosecution.
No information was immediately provided on whether the suspect had been charged before a court as of the police briefing.
The command also did not disclose whether a medical examination had been conducted on the alleged victim or whether forensic evidence had been obtained.
No relationship between the suspect and the 70-year-old woman was stated in the information released by police.
The incident was reported in Igueben, one of the local government areas in Edo State.
Police said the suspect would face prosecution in accordance with the law once investigators had completed their work.
The arrest was among developments disclosed by the Edo State Police Command as it presented details of its operations over the preceding week.
The command used the briefing to provide updates on arrests and other security matters across the state.
In addressing the Igueben case specifically, the police highlighted sexual violence as an issue of concern and assured that the allegation would receive a thorough investigation.
The case remains at the investigation stage.
Consequently, the allegation against the suspect has not been established by a court, and no finding of guilt has been made.
The police have, however, confirmed that the man is in custody and said he will be prosecuted after the investigation is concluded.
Further details, including the suspect’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence, may become available if police formally charge him before a court.
For now, the established information from the Edo State Police Command is that a 37-year-old man has been arrested over the alleged rape of a 70-year-old woman in Igueben and remains in custody while investigators continue their work.
