Troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, have neutralised at least 16 terrorists in a coordinated ambush and precision air strike across Sector 4 of the theatre in Adamawa State, but the victory came at a heavy cost: three soldiers paid the supreme sacrifice during concurrent attacks on their positions. The operations, conducted between September 30 and October 1, 2026, marked one of the most significant tactical breakthroughs in the North-East in recent weeks and came as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence Anniversary. The Acting Military Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North East, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed the details in a statement issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

The operation began in the Boima general area of Gombi Local Government Area, where troops conducted a well-coordinated ambush on a terrorist enclave. The swift tactical action resulted in the neutralisation of 16 terrorists. A subsequent exploitation of the engagement site led to the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, two pump-action rifles, one Dane gun, six AK-47 magazines and a belt of pump-action cartridges. The recovered weapons represented a significant degradation of the terrorists' combat capability and denied them freedom of action within the sector, according to the military.

Reinforcing the ground operations, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai delivered a precision strike in the early hours of October 1. At approximately 4:40 a.m., an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platform detected a concentration of about 16 terrorists assembling alongside 15 motorcycles beneath a tree canopy in Sector 4. Following positive identification and target acquisition, a precision air interdiction was executed at 5:30 a.m., recording a direct hit. Subsequent Battle Damage Assessment confirmed the successful destruction of the target, while a few surviving elements scattered in disarray. The strike was a textbook demonstration of the military's growing capacity to integrate real-time intelligence with precision airpower, a capability that has become increasingly central to the counter-insurgency campaign in the North-East.

But the operation was not without tragedy. Concurrently, insurgents launched coordinated attacks on troop locations at 226 Battalion in Garkida and 232 Battalion in Garaha. Responding with overwhelming firepower, the troops repelled the assailants, forcing them to abort the mission and withdraw precipitously. During the fierce battle, three soldiers were killed. Their identities have not been disclosed pending notification of their families. Wounded personnel were swiftly evacuated and are currently in stable condition, receiving medical treatment. The military described the fallen soldiers as "brave" and acknowledged the "supreme sacrifice" they made in defence of the nation.

The deaths of the three soldiers underscore the human cost of the campaign against terrorism and insurgency in Nigeria's North-East, where the military has been engaged in a protracted war against Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province for more than a decade. While the military has recorded significant successes in recent months, including the rescue of kidnapped victims, the neutralisation of terrorist commanders, and the recovery of weapons and ammunition, the insurgency remains a potent threat, and soldiers continue to pay the ultimate price in the line of duty. The attack on 226 Battalion in Garkida was not the first time the location has been targeted. In February 2026, ISWAP terrorists attacked the Garahamojili camp of the Nigerian Army in Adamawa State, killing two soldiers during a 20-minute firefight. In a separate incident in February, three soldiers and a woman were killed when insurgents overran a military camp in Garaha District of Hong Local Government Area. The recurrence of attacks on these positions suggests that terrorist groups continue to probe military defences in the area, seeking vulnerabilities to exploit.

The operational successes came amid the ongoing rejigging of the Headquarters Theatre Command, aimed at strengthening joint integration, improving operational synergy and ensuring the inclusion of relevant stakeholders in the counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency campaign. Captain Goni said the renewed approach was already yielding operational dividends through enhanced coordination of land and air components and other supporting elements. The Theatre Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining its aggressive posture and leveraging intelligence, technology and joint capabilities to deny terrorists freedom of action across the North-East. It also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies as operations continue across the theatre.

For the families of the three fallen soldiers, the Independence Day celebrations were overshadowed by grief. While the nation marked 66 years of independence, they mourned loved ones who died protecting the territorial integrity of Nigeria. The military has not released their names, but their sacrifice will be remembered. As the Theatre Command noted, the troops of Operation Hadin Kai remain resolute in defending the nation and creating the conditions for lasting peace, security and socio-economic development across the region. The 16 terrorists killed in Boima and the precision air strike that followed are tangible victories, but they are victories purchased with blood. The coming days will see follow-up exploitation and mop-up operations continue across the affected areas, as the military seeks to build on the momentum and prevent the surviving terrorists from regrouping. For the people of Adamawa State, the operations represent a measure of hope that the military is taking the fight to the enemy. For the families of the fallen, they represent a loss that no victory can ever fully heal.
