A grey Lexus Jeep 350 with registration number LSD 554 KV lost control, violently collided with a roadside pole, and overturned along the Lagos Coastal Road inward Eko Hotel in the early hours of Friday, October 2, 2026, leaving one person dead and three others seriously injured. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, and made available to journalists on Friday.

According to preliminary findings by LASTMA, the vehicle reportedly lost control before it collided with the roadside pole and subsequently overturned. The impact of the crash left three victims critically injured and claimed one life. The three injured victims were extricated from the wreckage with the assistance of Good Samaritans and promptly conveyed to Duck-Yard Hospital within the Military Zone for urgent medical attention. Security personnel from Victoria Island also provided reinforcement at the scene, while LASTMA operatives removed the mangled vehicle from the carriageway to prevent a secondary collision and restore vehicular movement along the axis. Relevant emergency and security agencies were also engaged to undertake rescue, investigation and safety procedures.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to exercise caution while driving. He warned that excessive speed, reckless driving and loss of vehicular control could have devastating and irreversible consequences for motorists and other road users. Bakare-Oki urged motorists to exercise greater vigilance, maintain safe speeds and comply strictly with traffic regulations. He also urged motorists and members of the public to report road crashes, vehicle breakdowns, obstructions and other emergencies through the agency's toll-free short code, 3367, for prompt intervention.

The crash is the latest in a series of fatal road traffic incidents that have claimed lives on Lagos roads in 2026, raising fresh concerns about road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations across the state. On March 1, 2026, a yam-laden truck lost control during a failed U-turn and rammed into a stationary commercial tricycle at Aiyetoro Junction in Epe, Lagos State, leaving one person dead and three others seriously injured. The truck, with registration number AGL 764 XB, was attempting to make a U-turn towards Eleko when the driver lost control and crashed into the tricycle, trapping the occupants in the wreckage. LASTMA operatives, alongside personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the military, rescued three critically injured occupants. The injured victims and the deceased were conveyed to the General Hospital in Epe for medical attention and necessary procedures.

In May 2026, the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that three persons died while one other was injured in an accident involving a Lexus Jeep and a Boxer motorcycle along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. In September 2026, three women were killed and 10 others sustained varying degrees of injuries after a vehicle plunged from the Long Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and fell into a ditch. The recurring nature of these crashes has prompted repeated calls for improved road safety measures, including better enforcement of speed limits, stricter licensing requirements for commercial drivers, and enhanced public awareness campaigns on the dangers of reckless driving.

The Lagos State Government has consistently maintained that it is committed to reducing road traffic crashes and improving safety for all road users. LASTMA has been at the forefront of traffic management and emergency response in the state, deploying operatives to major highways and crash-prone corridors. However, the persistence of fatal crashes suggests that enforcement and infrastructure alone may not be enough to address the root causes of reckless driving. Excessive speed, poor vehicle maintenance, drunk driving, and disregard for traffic regulations remain significant contributors to road traffic fatalities in Lagos and across Nigeria.

For the family of the person killed in Friday's crash, the loss is immeasurable. For the three victims fighting for their lives at Duck-Yard Hospital, the coming days will be critical. For the Lagos State authorities, the incident is another reminder of the urgent need to strengthen road safety enforcement and prevent the preventable. As Bakare-Oki noted, excessive speed and loss of vehicular control can have devastating and irreversible consequences. The crash on the Coastal Road is a tragic illustration of that warning, and it serves as a grim reminder that road safety is not just a matter of policy but of life and death.
