A victim who was shot during the gunmen attack on Yargada village in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State has emerged as one of those caught up in the violence that left residents dead, injured and dozens abducted.

The latest update provides a human face to the attack, which occurred on Sunday, September 27, 2026, when armed men invaded Yargada and neighbouring communities in Zamfara.

According to security information cited by AFP, about 40 women were abducted from Yargada during the assault. The same report said one person was killed and several others were injured, while six vehicles were set ablaze and shops were looted.

The newly identified victim was among those caught in the attack and was shot by the gunmen. Details about the victim’s identity and current medical condition were not immediately available from the sources reviewed.

The attack has continued to draw concern because of the scale of the abduction and the violence reported during the operation. Residents in the affected communities were reportedly left vulnerable as the attackers moved through the area.

Local accounts cited by Nigerian media also indicated that the violence extended beyond Yargada to nearby communities, including Maikogo and Magama Mairake. In Magama Mairake, a resident, Lawali Kutsa Ada, said armed men arrived around midnight, fired sporadically and carried out house-to-house searches.

Kutsa said the attackers abducted about 44 people, mostly women and children, and reportedly set about 10 vehicles on fire. However, police said the actual number of people abducted across the affected communities was still being investigated.

Zamfara State Police spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed that the command received reports of an attack and abduction in the area. He said a search and rescue team had been deployed to work toward securing the release of the victims.

The police also said officers were attempting to prevent the abductors from moving further with their captives, while investigations continued to establish the exact number of people taken.

The Yargada incident was part of a wider wave of attacks recorded across northern Nigeria during the weekend. In neighbouring Niger State, at least 47 farmers were reportedly abducted on Saturday while harvesting peanuts in Rimi, in the Mariga Local Government Area.

Combined, the two incidents left more than 80 people reported abducted, with the majority being women. The Yargada abductions were reported in a security report prepared for the United Nations and reviewed by AFP.

The attacks have once again highlighted the continuing threat posed by armed criminal groups operating in rural communities across northwestern Nigeria. Such groups have repeatedly targeted villages, farms and travellers, often abducting residents for ransom and fleeing into difficult-to-access areas.

The latest violence also comes against the background of increasing concern over kidnapping in the country. Research by SBM Intelligence found that about N7.78 billion was paid in ransom between July 2025 and June 2026, representing more than three times the amount recorded during the corresponding period a year earlier.

For residents of Yargada and surrounding communities, however, the figures offer only part of the story. The victim who was shot, those who were abducted and the families searching for them represent the immediate human consequences of the attack.

The emergence of the victim also underscores the severity of the assault beyond the reported number of abductees. While international reports initially focused largely on the 40 women taken from Yargada, subsequent accounts have pointed to other casualties and injuries among residents who were caught in the violence.

Authorities have not publicly released a complete casualty figure for the Yargada attack. Consequently, reports of the number killed, injured or abducted remain subject to the outcome of ongoing investigations and information gathering by security agencies.

As security personnel continue efforts to locate those taken from the communities, residents remain concerned about their safety and the possibility of further attacks.

The incident adds to a growing list of mass abductions recorded in northern Nigeria in recent weeks and has renewed calls for stronger protection of vulnerable rural communities.

For now, the identity and full condition of the latest reported shooting victim have not been publicly established, but the update confirms that the Yargada assault involved not only mass abductions but also direct violence against residents caught in the attackers’ path.

The focus of security agencies remains on rescuing those still in captivity, establishing the full extent of the casualties and identifying those responsible for the attack.
