Several people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday, October 5, 2026.

The helicopter reportedly came down in a swampy area opposite the Naval Base in Igbokoda, throwing residents of the coastal community into panic.

The Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, confirmed the crash in a telephone conversation with journalists.

Oripelaye said the aircraft had been burnt beyond recognition, adding that military equipment was found at the crash site.

However, he said authorities had yet to establish how many people were aboard the helicopter at the time of the crash.

A report by Arise News described the aircraft as a suspected military helicopter, although its identity and operator had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing the report.

The circumstances surrounding the crash also remained unclear, while the identities and conditions of those who may have been on board were yet to be established.

Earlier reports from the community said residents had gathered around the area following the crash as efforts were made to access the swampy location and determine the extent of the incident.

The Ondo State Police Command also said it had not yet received full details of the incident. Police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh reportedly said he was unaware of the crash but would make inquiries.

Reports from other media outlets have similarly stated that several people were feared dead, but no official authority had, as of the time of reporting, released a confirmed casualty figure.

The identity of the helicopter, its destination and the purpose of the flight were also not immediately known.

Igbokoda is a major riverine community and commercial centre in Ilaje Local Government Area, one of Ondo State’s oil-producing areas. Helicopters are commonly used in the wider coastal region for logistics and other offshore operations.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as the crash site is secured and an assessment of the incident is conducted.

For now, reports of fatalities remain unconfirmed, and the number of people aboard the aircraft has yet to be established.
