Residents of the Ikirun/Ifelodun constituency in Osun State have announced plans to stage a protest over what they described as years of poor governance, inadequate infrastructure and neglect by elected representatives.

The planned demonstration, organised under the Osun State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), is expected to take place by the end of October 2026 after organisers complete mobilisation across the constituency.

The protest is being organised under the slogan, “End Bad Governance Now – Ikirun/Ifelodun,” with Hon. Comrade Olatunji Orah identified as one of the leaders coordinating the planned action.

Speaking to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, October 6, Orah said the planned protest was prompted by what he described as the failure of successive lawmakers representing the constituency to provide basic amenities and adequate representation.

According to him, residents had become frustrated by what they considered a prolonged absence of meaningful development in several communities within the constituency.

He alleged that successive representatives had been unable to point to significant projects delivered for the benefit of residents.

Orah also said the organisers were mobilising students and other residents to participate in the demonstration, adding that the protest would be peaceful and focused on demanding accountability from those in positions of authority.

Among the issues highlighted by the organisers are poor roads, inadequate water supply, lack of electricity and streetlights, absence of banking facilities and insecurity.

Areas identified on a flyer announcing the planned protest include Ilupeju, Oke Ago, Orisa Elejin, Ogo Oluwa, Old Inisha Road Junction–Alamsi to Dagbolu, Olonde Street, Winlola Street Eweta and Adedeji Estate.

Orah specifically complained about the condition of roads across the constituency, saying residents face difficulties moving around because of their poor state.

He also raised concerns over access to water, alleging that some residents have to walk for between 20 and 30 minutes to obtain water because of the lack of adequate water facilities.

The activist said residents had repeatedly requested basic amenities, including boreholes and streetlights, but claimed that their appeals had not received adequate attention.

He further alleged that he personally contacted the member of the Osun State House of Assembly representing the area but received no response.

The Osun State House of Assembly's official website lists Tajudeen Akinlolu Adeyemi as the member representing Ifelodun Constituency in the current 8th Assembly.

Orah also cited the absence of a traditional ruler in the constituency as another source of concern, alleging that the area had experienced a six-year vacuum in traditional leadership.

He described the planned demonstration as a peaceful demand for accountability rather than an attempt to cause disorder.

The organisers have adopted the slogan, “We speak. We demand. We hold power accountable,” to communicate the objective of the planned protest.

The grievances raised by the organisers are not entirely new. In May 2026, residents and stakeholders in Obaagun, also in Ifelodun Local Government Area, complained about poor roads, inadequate healthcare, water shortages, electricity problems and what they described as government neglect.

Similarly, residents of several Osun communities staged a protest in June 2025 over the condition of roads linking their communities to the Osogbo–Ikirun expressway. They appealed to the state government to intervene, while also complaining about unfulfilled promises from elected representatives.

The latest planned protest therefore comes amid continuing concerns raised by communities in parts of Osun State about infrastructure and access to basic public services.

However, the allegations made by the organisers have not been independently established as evidence of misconduct by any particular lawmaker. The planned protest is still at the mobilisation stage, and the affected representatives or relevant government authorities have not, in the report reviewed, provided a response to the specific allegations.

The organisers say they intend to proceed with the demonstration before the end of October and use it to demand greater attention to the constituency's infrastructure, security, water supply, electricity and political representation.
