Passengers travelling along the Goronyo–Sokoto road in Sokoto State were reportedly attacked by suspected bandits on Monday morning, leaving two people dead and several others abducted.
The incident occurred at about 9am around Hawan Ado, when the attackers reportedly blocked a vehicle conveying about 12 passengers from Goronyo towards Sokoto.
According to residents familiar with the incident, the driver reportedly refused to stop when the attackers attempted to intercept the vehicle. The assailants allegedly opened fire, killing the driver and a passenger identified by residents as Sadik Abdullahi, a student of Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.
The vehicle subsequently veered off the road, creating an opportunity for some of the passengers to escape, while others were reportedly taken away by the attackers.
A resident who spoke about the incident described the situation as another frightening reminder of the danger facing travellers along major roads in the area.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that two travellers were killed in the attack. However, the police said the exact number of passengers abducted had not been established as of the time of the report.
The latest attack has renewed concerns among residents and commuters over the safety of the Goronyo–Sokoto corridor, which has experienced repeated security incidents in recent months.
Goronyo Local Government Area has continued to feature in reports of bandit attacks and kidnappings. In September, reports documented attacks in the area involving killings and abductions, while security operations have also led to the rescue of kidnapped persons.
For commuters, the latest incident has once again raised difficult questions about how long ordinary Nigerians will continue to risk their lives simply by travelling between communities.
The killing of a driver and a student, alongside the reported abduction of other passengers, has left families waiting for information about their loved ones and renewed calls for stronger security measures on vulnerable highways.
As of Tuesday, details about the identities and whereabouts of the abducted passengers remained unclear, while security authorities were expected to continue efforts to establish the full circumstances of the attack and locate those taken away.
The incident adds to a growing pattern of attacks on travellers along roads across the North-West, where bandits have repeatedly targeted commercial vehicles and other road users.
