Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory Police Command have rescued a man from an angry mob in Kuje Area Council after he was allegedly caught attempting to abduct a five-year-old child.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at about 2:46pm in Angwan Lado, Kuje, after the police received a distress call that an unidentified man was being assaulted by residents over an alleged attempt to abduct a child.
According to the FCT Police Command, officers from the Kuje Division were immediately deployed to the scene, where they found the suspect, identified as Bashir Usman, being attacked by an irate mob.
The officers intervened and rescued Usman before the situation could escalate further.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect was being assaulted over allegations that he had attempted to abduct a five-year-old child in front of her residence in Angwan Lado, the police said.
The police have since taken Usman into protective custody while investigators expand their inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the allegation and determine whether other people may have been involved.
The Command has not said that the suspect has been found guilty of attempting to abduct the child. The allegation remains subject to investigation.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, warned residents against taking the law into their own hands or subjecting suspects to jungle justice.
According to the Command, mob action is criminal and can have fatal consequences, stressing that allegations of criminal conduct should be reported to law enforcement agencies for investigation and prosecution through due process.
The police also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and pay close attention to the safety and welfare of children.
Residents were encouraged to report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command's emergency contact lines.
The investigation into the alleged attempted abduction is ongoing.
