The Lagos State Government has sealed 14 properties across different parts of the state over alleged illegal discharge of untreated sewage and wastewater into public drainage channels and other areas.

The enforcement action was carried out by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) as part of intensified monitoring and compliance activities aimed at curbing improper wastewater disposal.

The affected properties are located in Ikotun, Ikoyi, Isheri-Osun, Lagos Island, Ikorodu and Amuwo-Odofin, according to a statement on the enforcement exercise published on October 6, 2026.

The agency said the operation followed complaints from members of the public as well as findings from routine monitoring and investigations conducted by its officials.

General Manager of LSWMO, Adefemi Afolabi, said the affected properties were found to be releasing untreated sewage from septic tanks and other wastewater systems into public drains, ongoing drainage works and surrounding areas.

According to Afolabi, some of the violations involved broken or dilapidated sewer chambers, illegally connected sewer pipes and the deliberate pumping of septic tank contents into public drainage channels.

The agency said the practices had resulted in foul odour, faecal contamination and environmental nuisance, while potentially exposing residents and surrounding communities to public health risks.

Afolabi described proper wastewater management as a public health responsibility and warned property owners, residents, facility managers and businesses against practices that could endanger the environment or undermine sanitation efforts.

He said the agency would continue to respond to credible complaints and take enforcement action whenever investigations establish violations.

“We will continue to respond to credible complaints and act wherever our investigations establish violations,” Afolabi said, stressing that wastewater generated by residential, commercial and institutional properties must be properly contained, treated and disposed of through approved channels.

The latest enforcement is part of a broader wastewater-management crackdown by the Lagos State Government.

In August 2025, the state sealed residential properties in Abule Egba and Lekki-Eti-Osa over the alleged deliberate discharge of raw sewage into public drains through pumping machines. The state said such practices constituted environmental pollution and public nuisance.

In April 2026, the government also sealed four properties in Ikotun and Ajah over alleged illegal discharge of untreated wastewater into public spaces. The affected premises included residential properties, a public toilet and a mechanic workshop.

The government has repeatedly warned property owners and facility operators to comply with approved wastewater disposal standards, while stressing that violations could attract sanctions under applicable environmental regulations.

LSWMO urged residents to report suspected cases of illegal wastewater discharge and other environmental infractions to the appropriate authorities to assist with investigation and enforcement.

The agency said the objective of the continued monitoring was to protect public health, preserve the environment and ensure that wastewater generated across Lagos is managed through approved channels.
