The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Abbas Ibrahim, over an alleged fire attack that left his elder brother dead and his brother’s wife seriously injured in Gwaram Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred at about 11:30pm on September 29, 2026, at Nassarawa village in Gwaram LGA, according to the police.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, said in a statement that Ibrahim allegedly entered the residence of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, poured petrol inside the room and set it on fire.
Basiru and his wife reportedly sustained serious burns in the incident. Relatives subsequently took the couple to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment.
However, Basiru later died from the injuries he sustained in the fire, while his wife survived but was reportedly left seriously injured.
Following the incident, police operatives commenced an investigation which led to Ibrahim’s arrest in Sara town, also in Gwaram Local Government Area.
The police said the suspect claimed to be of unsound mind. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation and legal action.
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
He also called on members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies.
The police allegation against Ibrahim has not been established by a court. He remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty through due legal process.
