Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled a coordinated attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a military position in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, with the Nigerian Army reporting that more than 25 terrorists were neutralised.

The attack was launched against troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion, according to a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer of the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation Hadin Kai.

The Army said the attackers approached the military position from four directions in an attempt to overwhelm the troops.

However, the soldiers, supported by the Air Component, reportedly repelled the assault and forced surviving fighters to withdraw from the area.

The military said its preliminary assessment indicated that more than 25 terrorists were neutralised during the encounter. However, only 14 bodies had been recovered at the time of the statement, meaning the higher figure remained a preliminary military assessment rather than a confirmed body count.

Following the confrontation, troops conducted further operations around the area and recovered weapons and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles, according to the Army.

The military said operations were continuing to locate additional weapons, track the fleeing fighters and prevent them from regrouping.

The Army also acknowledged that some soldiers were killed during the encounter.

The military expressed condolences to the families of the fallen personnel and commended the troops for what it described as their courage and commitment during the attack.

The Army said the successful defence of the position demonstrated the readiness of troops operating in the North-East and highlighted the role of coordinated air and ground operations in responding to terrorist attacks.

It added that troops would sustain operations aimed at disrupting terrorist networks, protecting communities and restricting the movement of armed groups in the theatre.

The latest incident comes amid continuing military operations against ISWAP and other armed groups in Borno State, where security forces have repeatedly confronted attacks on military positions and civilian communities.

The reported casualty figures are based on the Nigerian Army's preliminary assessment and had not been independently verified by another authority at the time of publication.
