The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with separate incidents of alleged arson and stabbing that resulted in the deaths of two men in the state.

The incidents occurred in Gwaram and Dutse Local Government Areas, with the police confirming the arrests as part of investigations into the separate cases.

In the first incident, police arrested 27-year-old Abbas Ibrahim over the death of his elder brother, Basiru Shuaibu, following a fire incident at Nassarawa village in Gwaram Local Government Area.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 11:30pm on September 29, 2026.

According to the Jigawa Police spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, Ibrahim allegedly entered his elder brother’s residence, poured petrol inside a room and set it on fire.

Basiru and his wife sustained serious burns and were taken by relatives to a traditional medicine practitioner for treatment. Basiru later died from the injuries he sustained in the incident.

Police said Ibrahim was subsequently arrested in Sara town, Gwaram LGA, and the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation.

The police spokesperson also said the suspect claimed to be of unsound mind, although the circumstances surrounding that claim and the motive for the alleged attack remain subject to investigation.

In a separate incident, police arrested a 20-year-old man, identified in reports as Lawisi Safiyanu, over the alleged stabbing death of 25-year-old Muhammad Abba in Chamo village, Dutse Local Government Area.

The incident occurred at about 12:30am on October 1, 2026, following a disagreement reportedly connected to a ₦500 balance from the purchase of a mobile phone.

Police said preliminary investigations indicated that Abba had purchased the phone from the suspect for ₦1,500 but paid ₦1,000 and was unable to immediately settle the outstanding balance.

An argument allegedly followed, during which Safiyanu stabbed Abba. The victim was taken to Rashid Shekoni Teaching Hospital in Dutse, where he later died while receiving medical treatment.

The police said the suspect was arrested and the case was subsequently taken up for prosecution.

Confirming the arrests and the two separate incidents, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, CP Tijjani Murtala, urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

He also called on members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities, threats and disputes to the police or other relevant security agencies.

The two cases remain matters before the relevant authorities, and the allegations against the suspects have not been established by a court. Both suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty through due process of law.
