BREAKING: Army Detains Plateau Human Rights Defender Lawrence Zongo After Visiting Injured Relatives In Jos

The Nigerian Army has reportedly detained human rights defender and conflict documenter Lawrence Zongo in Jos, Plateau State, after he visited a military hospital to see relatives who were receiving treatment following an attack in Bassa Local Government Area.

According to a report published on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, Zongo was allegedly taken into custody on Monday, October 5, while at a military facility within Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba Barracks, which houses the headquarters of the Nigerian Army’s 3 Division in Jos.

Sources cited in the report said Zongo had travelled to the facility after relatives were attacked in Meyango, Bassa LGA, on Sunday night.

One of his first cousins was reportedly among those affected and allegedly died from injuries sustained in the attack before Zongo arrived at the hospital on Monday.

The sources alleged that soldiers arrested Zongo while he was at the facility and that he had remained in custody without being charged.

They further alleged that he had been denied access to his lawyers and family members, although these claims have not been independently verified.

There were also claims that Zongo was wearing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses when he arrived at the military facility and that this may have contributed to the decision to detain him. That claim has not been independently established.

As of the time of the report, the reason for Zongo’s reported detention and whether any formal allegation or charge had been brought against him remained unclear.

The Nigerian Army had also not publicly commented on the reported detention.

Zongo is known for documenting violence and human rights concerns in Plateau State. He has worked as a conflict reporter and human rights documenter, including with organisations involved in documenting alleged abuses in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

In May 2026, the Guardian reported that Zongo was among documenters whose work was referenced in a communication by United Nations Special Rapporteurs concerning alleged human rights violations in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. The UN experts had sought information from Nigerian authorities concerning alleged unlawful killings, security failures and accountability measures in affected communities.

His previous reporting has also focused on attacks and security concerns affecting communities around Bassa and other parts of Plateau State. TruthNigeria identified him as a human rights defender and conflict reporter in a June 2025 report on violence around Kwall.

The latest development has therefore drawn attention because of Zongo’s work documenting conflict and alleged human rights abuses in the region.

However, the circumstances surrounding his reported arrest remain unclear, and allegations concerning his treatment in custody have not been independently confirmed.

Further clarification from the Nigerian Army would be required to establish why Zongo was detained, whether he remains in custody and whether any formal investigation or charge has been initiated against him.

Stone Reporters will continue to monitor the development and report any official response from the military or other relevant authorities.
