The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested and commenced investigation into some of its officers accused of extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders and other acts of unprofessional conduct during a stop-and-search operation involving a biker.
The development followed the circulation of a video on social media showing an encounter between the biker and a police patrol team, which generated public reactions over the conduct of the officers.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, a complaint was lodged at the Ilupeju Police Division on October 6 by representatives of the Biker Association, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Chapter.
The complainants alleged that one of their members, who was riding alone from Itapa to Ikole-Ekiti, was intercepted by a police patrol team and subjected to an alleged demand for money under circumstances they considered improper.
Following the complaint, the command said it immediately commenced preliminary inquiries and identified the officers involved. The officers were subsequently taken into custody for questioning as investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police said the allegations include extortion, intimidation, disobedience to lawful orders and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
The matter has now been transferred to the Ekiti State Police Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti for what the command described as a discreet, comprehensive and impartial investigation aimed at establishing the facts and determining the appropriate action under the law.
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, also directed that the officers be subjected to appropriate disciplinary procedures in accordance with the applicable Nigeria Police Force regulations, subject to the outcome of the investigation.
The command condemned extortion, intimidation, abuse of authority and other conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the police.
It stressed that no police officer is authorised to demand or collect money from members of the public while carrying out legitimate police duties. Officers found culpable of misconduct or abuse of office are expected to face appropriate sanctions under police regulations and the law.
The Police Command further encouraged members of the public to report alleged cases of unprofessional conduct involving its personnel through the appropriate channels, assuring residents that credible complaints would receive attention.
The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the officers have not been established by a court.
