The Kano State Police Command has handed over a recovered orange Vibe motor vehicle and an ash-coloured Haojue motorcycle to their rightful owners, after verifying ownership documents in a formal ceremony at the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano. The handover, disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the command's Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, followed intelligence-led operations that led to the recovery of the two properties.
"The vehicles were recovered through intelligence-led operations and handed over to their owners at the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano, after the necessary verification and documentation," the statement said. The beneficiaries thanked the police for recovering their properties and commended the officers for their efforts, describing the handover as evidence of a responsive, people-friendly police service. The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, congratulated the owners and said the recovery was in line with the policing vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu. "The policing vision emphasises the protection of lives and property, restoration of stolen property to victims of crime, and building public trust through transparent and accountable service delivery," the statement said. Bakori assured residents that the command remained committed to ensuring the safety and security of Kano State. "The Command remains resolutely committed to making Kano State safe and secure," he said. He added that the police would continue to ensure that recovered stolen properties were returned to their legitimate owners after due verification.
The command urged members of the public seeking information about recovered properties to contact the investigating police officer on 08140081608 or visit the office of the police public relations officer at the Bompai Police Headquarters.
The handover, while modest in scale, reflects a broader pattern of vehicle recovery operations that the Kano State Police Command has conducted throughout 2026. In September, the command recovered four stolen motor vehicles and handed them over to their respective owners following intelligence-led operations and collaboration among police formations. The recoveries were made between August 1 and September 1, 2026, during separate operations coordinated under Bakori's direction. Operatives of the Dala Area Command arrested a suspect and recovered a suspected stolen Dangote trailer head with registration number BKD 350 XB. In another operation, operatives of the Dawakin Kudu Division, working with the Datty Division in Lagos, traced and recovered a Toyota Matrix with registration number ABJ 398 CG, which was subsequently handed over to its owner. The Market Division, acting on technical intelligence, arrested a suspect and recovered a maroon 2016 Hyundai Sonata with registration number GWA 93 DW, which had been stolen in Kaduna and was later handed over to its owner. The Special Intervention Squad also arrested two suspects and recovered a golden Honda Civic valued at N1.5 million, which was reportedly stolen in Sharada, Kano, and handed over to its female owner.
The scale of the command's anti-vehicle theft operations was further demonstrated in mid-September, when Bakori disclosed the arrest of 10 suspected members of an interstate motor vehicle theft syndicate and the recovery of 12 stolen vehicles in Kano and neighbouring states. Five suspects were initially arrested in Adamawa State on September 7, where a white Mercedes-Benz GLK 350 was recovered. Discreet investigations and intelligence-led follow-up operations led to the recovery of 10 additional stolen vehicles from different locations across Kano and neighbouring states. Another operation on September 12 resulted in the arrest of five more suspects in Tarauni Local Government Area and the recovery of a stolen white Toyota Hilux. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were involved in stealing vehicles in Kano, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe and other neighbouring states before concealing and transporting them across state borders for sale. The recovered vehicles included Toyota Corolla, Pontiac Vibe, Mercedes-Benz GLK 350, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Sienna, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Camry and Hyundai Tucson. Bakori noted that 11 of the 12 recovered vehicles were unregistered, making it difficult for the police to trace their rightful owners, and warned motorists against driving unregistered vehicles or using covered and concealed number plates.
The command has consistently attributed its vehicle recovery successes to intelligence-led policing, inter-state collaboration and community partnership. The operations are conducted in line with the strategic directive of the Inspector-General of Police, whose policing vision emphasises intelligence-led, technology-driven and community-centred strategies. The command has strengthened intelligence gathering and enhanced the operational capacity of its Violent Crime Response Unit and Special Intervention Squad to tackle vehicle theft and other forms of criminality. The police have also urged vehicle owners to strengthen security around their vehicles by parking in secure and well-lit areas, installing anti-theft devices such as trackers, gear locks and alarms, and avoiding leaving vehicle keys, documents and valuables inside their vehicles. They have also encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious sale or movement of vehicles to the nearest police station immediately.
Vehicle theft remains a persistent challenge in Kano State and across Nigeria's northern regions, where stolen vehicles are frequently transported across state borders for resale. The interstate nature of the crime has necessitated closer collaboration among police commands, with the Kano command working alongside counterparts in Adamawa, Lagos, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi and Gombe to track stolen vehicles and dismantle the syndicates that move them. The command's decision to publicise the handover of recovered properties serves both a practical and symbolic purpose: it reunites victims with their property and signals to the public that the police are actively pursuing vehicle theft networks.
The political context of the operations is significant. The 2027 general elections are less than four months away, with the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, and the governorship and state assembly elections for February 6. Security has emerged as one of the central issues in the campaign, alongside the cost of living and the economy. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seeking a second term on the All Progressives Congress platform, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress, former Anambra Governor Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement are among the major challengers. Kano, as Nigeria's most populous state and a key battleground in the North-West, will be closely watched. The conduct of the state police command and its ability to protect lives and property will be part of the broader assessment of the security environment in which the elections will be conducted.
For the owners of the recovered Vibe car and Haojue motorcycle, the handover represents the restoration of property they may have assumed was lost forever. For the Kano State Police Command, it is another demonstration of its stated commitment to protecting lives and property and building public trust. For residents of Kano State, the recovery and return of stolen property, however modest in scale, is a reminder that the police remain active in the fight against vehicle theft and that timely reporting and community cooperation can lead to the recovery of stolen assets. As Bakori put it, the command remains resolutely committed to making Kano State safe and secure, and all recovered stolen properties will be returned to their legitimate owners after due verification.
