The chairman of a local government area in Akwa Ibom State has disbursed N50 million to 100 entrepreneurs under an empowerment initiative designed to strengthen small businesses and stimulate economic activity at the grassroots, in the latest chapter of the state's broader effort to build a culture of wealth creation through enterprise support. The disbursement, which provided each beneficiary with N500,000, forms part of the local government's commitment to the ARISE Agenda, the development blueprint of Governor Umo Eno's administration that prioritises economic empowerment, infrastructural renewal and grassroots transformation.
The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on direct financial support for micro and small enterprises as a pathway to job creation and poverty reduction. Across Akwa Ibom State, local government councils have been directed by the Governor to pursue impactful projects that improve the socio-economic well-being of residents at the grassroots level, and the disbursement of grants to entrepreneurs has become a central component of that strategy. The Governor has consistently argued that local governments have no justification for failing to execute projects that touch the lives of ordinary people, and that the ARISE Agenda provides a clear roadmap for translating available resources into tangible benefits for communities.
The N50 million disbursement to 100 entrepreneurs is the latest in a series of empowerment initiatives rolled out across the state's 31 local government areas. In Eket Local Government Area, the council chairman, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, unveiled the Eket ARISE Empowerment Initiative SmallBiz Grant, which provided N100,000 each to 500 entrepreneurs. The event, which coincided with the inauguration of a 5,000-capacity conference hall and the foundation stone laying for an ultramodern legislative complex, was described by the council chairman as a demonstration of the administration's resolve to support Small and Medium Enterprises as the backbone of the local economy. Governor Eno, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Frank Archibong, said the initiative reflected the collective vision for progress and the determination to complement the transformative ARISE Agenda. He urged the council to put monitoring mechanisms in place to track how successfully beneficiaries utilised the grants.
The pattern of empowerment disbursements extends beyond Eket. In Urue Offong Oruko Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman distributed N100 million to 100 beneficiaries, effectively creating one hundred new millionaires in a single initiative, according to local reports. The scale of that disbursement underscores the administration's stated ambition not merely to distribute resources but to nurture an entrenched culture of wealth creation. In March 2025, 833 entrepreneurs from the Abak-Etim Ekpo-Ika Federal Constituency received part of a N5.1 billion grant set aside for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises under the state's Micro Scale Medium Enterprises Development Scheme. In April 2025, a further N225 million was disbursed to 543 traders and business owners, while another N50 million was shared among 10 entrepreneurs, each receiving N5 million.
The beneficiaries of these grants have consistently expressed gratitude for the support and pledged to invest the funds responsibly to scale their businesses. One beneficiary, Deborah Willie, commended the council chairman for finding her worthy to benefit from the empowerment grants and promised to use the money judiciously to grow her petty trading business. The grants are typically disbursed with an expectation that beneficiaries will use the funds to expand their operations, purchase inventory, acquire equipment or meet other business needs that can improve their productivity and income.
The political context of the empowerment initiatives is significant. The 2027 general elections are less than four months away, with the presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, and the governorship and state assembly elections for February 6. Governor Umo Eno, who assumed office in May 2023, is expected to seek a second term, and his administration's record on grassroots development, job creation and economic empowerment will be central to its campaign. The ARISE Agenda has been positioned as the vehicle through which the government is translating its vision into tangible outcomes, and the disbursement of grants to entrepreneurs is one of the most visible expressions of that agenda. The Governor has consistently linked the empowerment programmes to his campaign promise to support and nurture entrepreneurs for success, emphasising the importance of skill development and recognising the potential of entrepreneurship in generating employment opportunities beyond government jobs or political appointments.
For the 100 entrepreneurs who received the N50 million, the grants represent both immediate financial relief and an opportunity to grow their businesses. For the local government areas implementing the initiatives, the disbursements are a demonstration of their capacity to deliver on the ARISE Agenda at the grassroots level. For the state government, the empowerment programmes are an investment in the productive capacity of its citizens and a strategy for reducing poverty, empowering local businesses and enhancing economic resilience. The coming months will determine whether the grants translate into sustainable business growth and job creation, and whether the beneficiaries can build on the support they have received to become employers of labour themselves. As the state government has consistently argued, the objective is not merely to distribute resources but to create a lasting culture of enterprise that can sustain economic development beyond the current administration. The N50 million disbursement to 100 entrepreneurs is a step in that direction, and its impact will be measured not by the ceremony that accompanied it but by the businesses that grow and the jobs that are created in the months and years ahead.
