At least nine people have reportedly been killed in fresh attacks by suspected armed herders on communities in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, with several other residents injured or missing.

The attacks reportedly occurred late on Friday, October 9, 2026, affecting Tse-Nyaku, Tse-Biliji and neighbouring communities in Mbatian Council Ward of Ngenev, as well as other settlements in the area.

According to reports by local residents, the assailants arrived in large numbers at about 11 p.m., opened fire and forced residents to flee their homes.

A resident who spoke anonymously to Vanguard said nine bodies had been recovered from the affected communities, while the whereabouts of several other residents remained unknown.

The resident expressed concern that the death toll could rise as families continued searching for missing relatives. Some communities were reportedly deserted following the attacks, leaving residents fearful of returning to their homes.

A separate report by THISDAY indicated that six bodies had been recovered at the time of publication, although residents alleged that as many as nine people had been killed. The discrepancy suggests that the final casualty figure had yet to be established.

Livinus Tyodoo, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Ukum I (Ngenev) State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, condemned the attacks, describing them as another devastating incident for communities already struggling with insecurity.

Tyodoo called on the Benue State Government, the Ukum Local Government Council and security agencies to strengthen operations in vulnerable communities, improve intelligence gathering and ensure that those responsible were identified and prosecuted.

He also urged authorities to take practical measures to enable displaced residents to return to their homes and farms without fear of further attacks.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Benue State, DSP Peter Aondongu, told reporters that he had yet to receive an official report on the incident when contacted.

The latest violence adds to continuing security concerns in parts of Benue State, where repeated attacks have resulted in deaths, displacement and disruption of farming activities.

As of the latest available reports, the police had not confirmed the final casualty figure or publicly identified those responsible for the attacks. The allegations against suspected armed herders have not been independently established.
