Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Lola Ashiru, has denied allegations that he personally received ₦10 billion meant for road construction, insisting that government projects are funded through established budgetary processes and executed by relevant ministries, departments and agencies.
Ashiru made the clarification on Saturday, October 10, 2026, during the commissioning of a 48-shop modern market in Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The lawmaker described the allegation as inaccurate and misleading, arguing that appropriation laws provide a verifiable basis for determining approved projects and their allocations.
He questioned why relevant government agencies, including the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), would not have raised questions if ₦10 billion had actually been paid into his personal account.
“If indeed N10bn had been paid into my personal account, as alleged, would the relevant government agencies, including the ICPC and EFCC, not have questions to ask,” he said.
Ashiru added that the appropriation acts were publicly available and could be examined to establish the projects approved and the amounts allocated to them.
The senator said he had been advised that the allegation could amount to defamation of character but chose not to pursue legal action out of respect for traditional institutions.
He used the occasion to list several road and infrastructure projects he said he had facilitated across Kwara South Senatorial District. They included the Owode Market–Onireke–Adeleke Road, Tafa Joba Road, Afolabi–Adie Road, Bulala–Obada Road and Imam Batara Road.
Other projects he mentioned included sections of the Ikotun–Offa Road, bridges in Ijagbo and Ikotun, and infrastructure in Omu-Aran and Oro-Ago. He said some projects were ongoing, while others were awaiting funding.
However, Ashiru did not provide a detailed breakdown of the alleged ₦10 billion allocation or documentary evidence showing the funding and implementation status of the projects listed in his remarks.
The market commissioning also provided an opportunity for the senator to reaffirm his support for the All Progressives Congress and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The allegations against Ashiru remain disputed, and the report did not establish that the lawmaker personally received the funds.
