Suspected political thugs on Saturday, October 10, 2026, disrupted the governorship campaign flag-off of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State, with reports of gunfire, injuries and damage to vehicles.
The incident reportedly began at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Emene, where NDC supporters had gathered to welcome the party’s Enugu governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, ahead of the campaign event.
According to reports by Premium Times, the supporters were dispersed by suspected thugs, while video footage showed people running for safety amid sporadic gunshots. One supporter was also seen being assaulted with a plank near the Air Force Base, sustaining an injury.
The violence reportedly continued after party members moved to the NDC secretariat in Enugu for the campaign flag-off. Gunshots were heard as supporters fled the venue, leaving chairs and canopies scattered. Some vehicles were also reported to have had their windscreens damaged.
Daily Echoes subsequently reported that a person was shot during the incident and that one person was feared dead. However, the reported death had not been independently confirmed by the other reports reviewed, and the full number of casualties remained unclear.
The Enugu State Police Command had not publicly responded to an enquiry by Premium Times at the time its report was published. The identities of those responsible for the latest attack and their political affiliations have not been officially established.
The incident comes amid previous reports of attacks on political gatherings in Enugu. In September, gunmen disrupted an NDC ward meeting in Obuofia, Nkanu West Local Government Area, leaving attendees injured. The police subsequently ordered an investigation into that incident and a separate disruption of a Peoples Democratic Party rally.
The latest attack has raised further concerns about the safety of political gatherings as parties prepare for the 2027 general elections.
