Reported by Oravbiere Osayomore Promise.

The Anambra State Government has suspended elections for traditional rulers and presidents-general of town unions scheduled for December 2026, January 2027 and February 2027, citing the need to prevent the exercises from clashing with political campaigns and the 2027 general elections.

The directive was contained in a public service announcement dated Wednesday, October 7, 2026, issued by the state Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs.

According to the announcement, communities scheduled to elect traditional rulers or town union executives in December 2026 have been directed to reschedule the exercises to November 2026.

However, communities whose leadership elections fall in January or February 2027 have been advised to postpone them until Easter 2027.

The ministry also directed that outgoing town union executives must hand over on the exact dates their tenures expire, despite the postponement of the elections.

The announcement was signed by Tony Onyekomelu, Head of Town Union Matters, on behalf of the commissioner.

Copies of the directive were sent to the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, the state director of the Department of State Services, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security and local government mayors.

The government directed traditional rulers, presidents-general of town unions, youth leaders and women leaders to take note of the decision and ensure compliance.

The suspension comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the state government seeking to prevent community leadership elections from coinciding with the electioneering period.

The directive affects communities whose traditional ruler and town union leadership elections fall within the specified months. The announcement did not indicate that elections outside the affected period had been suspended.
