The Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has lifted its temporary suspension of cattle movement to the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market in Jos South Local Government Area, following a security-related shutdown triggered by attacks on herders and traders.
The decision was reported on Sunday, October 11, 2026, after the association had earlier directed cattle owners and herders to suspend movement to the market from October 6 to October 20.
The initial suspension followed attacks on herders returning from the market, prompting concerns over the safety of cattle traders and people travelling along the affected routes.
According to earlier reports, gunmen attacked a vehicle conveying traders towards Bassa Local Government Area on October 4. The incident left one person dead and several others injured, although accounts of the casualty figures differed across reports.
The suspension was announced after a meeting involving MACBAN leaders, local government chairmen, traditional Fulani leaders known as Ardos and cattle owners. The association said the measure was intended to mourn those killed and reduce the risk of further attacks.
In its earlier communiqué, MACBAN called on security agencies to investigate the incidents, identify those responsible and strengthen security around the market and its access routes.
The association also appealed to its members to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and avoid retaliation, while reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence with other communities.
The lifting of the suspension is expected to allow cattle movement to resume at the market. However, the available report did not provide detailed information on the specific security assurances or arrangements that prompted the decision.
The attacks have renewed concerns about the safety of livestock traders and herders in Plateau State, where repeated incidents have disrupted commercial activities and heightened tensions in affected communities.
