Armed bandits have reportedly imposed a ₦50 million levy on communities in the Dansadau axis of Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, after attacking three villages, setting 12 vehicles ablaze and forcing more than 300 residents to flee their homes.
The attacks, reported on Monday, October 12, 2026, have heightened concerns over the security situation in the state, where armed groups have repeatedly attacked rural communities, abducted residents and imposed illegal levies on villagers.
According to reports by Leadership and Peoples Daily, the attackers raided three villages in the Dansadau area, displaced residents and demanded ₦50 million from the affected communities. The names of the three villages and the deadline for payment were not specified in the reports.
The reported levy places additional pressure on residents already facing displacement, destruction of property and disruption of their livelihoods. The attacks have also raised concerns about the ability of rural communities to access security protection and return safely to their homes.
The developments in Dansadau occurred alongside a separate deadly attack in Bukkuyum Local Government Area, where suspected bandits reportedly ambushed traders travelling under military escort along the route between Gurusu and Gwashi.
Reports by Leadership said at least 22 people, including four soldiers, were killed in the Bukkuyum incident. However, casualty figures reported by different outlets have varied, and the full toll remains unclear.
Hamisu Faru, the member representing Bukkuyum Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, confirmed the ambush, while Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, the Information Officer of Operation Fansan Yamma, confirmed the military casualties to Leadership.
The Zamfara State chapter of the National Democratic Congress condemned the attacks and called on the Federal and state governments to strengthen security deployments in vulnerable communities, including Dansadau and Bukkuyum.
The party also urged security agencies to intensify operations against armed groups and prevent further killings, displacement and destruction of property.
As of the latest reports, the Zamfara State Police Command had not provided a response to inquiries about the attacks. Further details about the affected villages, the alleged levy and any security response were not immediately available.
