A suspected bandit identified as Wakiyu has reportedly been killed during a confrontation involving security operatives and local community watch personnel in Damari, Sabuwa Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The reported incident occurred amid ongoing security operations against armed groups operating across parts of the state, particularly communities around Matazu and neighbouring areas.
According to a report published on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Wakiyu was killed during a clash involving personnel of the Nigerian Army, police officers and operatives of the Katsina Community Watch Corps, also known as C-Watch.
Conflict reporter Bakatsine, who shared the report on social media, alleged that Wakiyu was associated with the group of bandit leader Kachalla Maha and had been linked to criminal activities affecting residents of Matazu and surrounding communities.
However, the circumstances of the reported encounter, including the number of casualties and whether other suspects were arrested, have not been independently established.
The report commended troops of the Nigerian Army’s 17 Brigade in Katsina and other security personnel for their continued operations against armed groups in the state.
Katsina has experienced persistent security challenges involving attacks on rural communities, kidnappings and other criminal activities attributed to armed groups. Security agencies and local vigilante organisations have continued to conduct operations aimed at disrupting these networks.
In September, the Katsina Community Watch Corps reportedly arrested two men suspected of supplying ammunition to Kachalla Maha’s group in Matazu Local Government Area.
The latest report has yet to receive independent confirmation from the Nigerian Army or the Katsina State Police Command. Further official details are needed to establish the circumstances surrounding Wakiyu’s reported death and his alleged links to the group.
Residents have continued to face the effects of insecurity across parts of the state, with sustained security operations remaining central to efforts to protect communities and restore normal economic and social activities.
