The family of Nworie Christopher, a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) who died after sustaining gunshot injuries during an attack in Enugu, is seeking justice as the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Christopher, a native of Affa in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, reportedly sustained gunshot injuries during an attack at the campaign office of the party’s governorship candidate, Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Enugu on Saturday, October 10, 2026.

The NDC confirmed his death on Wednesday, October 14, saying efforts by party leaders to save his life were unsuccessful. The party called on security agencies to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.

According to reports, Ohaa led a delegation of party officials to the bereaved family on Tuesday, October 13, to express condolences. The party described Christopher’s death as a painful loss and renewed its demand for accountability over the attack.

The incident occurred amid reports of violence involving NDC supporters at two locations in Enugu on October 10: Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Emene and the party’s secretariat and campaign office in the state capital.

The police had earlier confirmed that a shooting incident occurred near the NDC secretariat and ordered an investigation. The command said a man sustained a suspected gunshot injury and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The Enugu State Government initially disputed reports that anyone had died during the incident. On Sunday, October 11, Secretary to the State Government Chidiebere Onyia said a man identified as Ifeanyi Nworie had been injured and that government findings indicated there had been no death.

However, the NDC subsequently announced Christopher’s death, prompting renewed calls for a transparent investigation into the shooting and the events that preceded it.

Governor Peter Mbah has since publicly addressed the violence, saying he expects the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. He also said anyone found responsible for criminal acts should be held accountable through due process, regardless of political connections.

The governor’s response followed public criticism over the handling of the incident. The NDC has called for an independent and transparent investigation into Christopher’s death and an earlier attack on party members in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area, on September 12, during which the party said eight members sustained gunshot injuries.

The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances of the October 10 shooting and determine who was responsible. As of the latest reports reviewed, no final findings identifying those responsible for Christopher’s death had been announced.

The killing has renewed concerns about political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections, with calls for political parties and security agencies to ensure that citizens can participate in lawful political activities without fear of attack.
