“The Best Way to Stop Lamine Yamal Is to Have the Ball” — Luis Enrique Warns PSG About Barcelona Stars

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has identified Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri among Barcelona's major threats ahead of Tuesday's UEFA Champions League encounter, insisting that controlling possession will be crucial to limiting the Spanish club's attacking influence.

The French champions will welcome Barcelona to the Parc des Princes in Paris on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in a highly anticipated league-phase meeting between two of Europe's leading clubs.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Monday, Enrique acknowledged the individual quality within Barcelona's squad, particularly the attacking influence of teenage winger Yamal.

The PSG manager explained that preventing Barcelona from controlling possession would be one of the most effective ways to restrict the young forward's opportunities.

“The best way to defend against Lamine Yamal is to have the ball,” Enrique said, according to comments published by PSG.

He acknowledged, however, that maintaining possession against Barcelona would be difficult because of the Spanish side's technical quality and established playing style.

Enrique also drew attention to Raphinha and Pedri, emphasising that Barcelona's attacking threat extends beyond Yamal.

The Brazilian winger and Spanish midfielder have become important figures in Barcelona's system under head coach Hansi Flick, contributing to a style of football built around possession, movement and attacking combinations.

Other players, including defender Pau Cubarsí and goalkeeper Joan García, were also mentioned in reports of Enrique's remarks, reflecting his assessment of Barcelona's strength across several positions.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on stopping one player, Enrique indicated that PSG would need a coordinated team performance to manage Barcelona's attacking options.

The meeting comes with Barcelona enjoying an impressive start to the 2026–27 season. Flick's side have won their opening 11 matches across competitions, establishing themselves as one of the form teams in European football.

Their performances in the Champions League have included victories over Feyenoord and Galatasaray, while PSG have also made a strong start to their European campaign.

The Paris club enter Tuesday's encounter following a 4-2 victory away to Manchester City in their previous Champions League fixture, a result that demonstrated their ability to compete against leading European opposition.

Enrique said he was particularly encouraged by the identity and character shown by his players, explaining that their collective performance mattered more to him than the result alone.

The Spanish manager also discussed his personal connection with Barcelona, having represented the club as a player before returning to manage the first team.

During his time as Barcelona manager, Enrique led the Catalan club to major domestic and European honours, including the Champions League title in 2015.

He acknowledged that facing his former club had initially been emotionally difficult but said he had become accustomed to the experience.

Despite his affection for Barcelona, Enrique made clear that his responsibility was to PSG and that his immediate objective was to secure victory.

He described both teams as clubs with strong footballing identities and considerable individual quality, suggesting that their meeting would provide an important examination of their respective approaches.

Enrique also rejected suggestions that Tuesday's fixture should be considered an early Champions League final.

He explained that the competition's league-phase format provides opportunities for leading teams to meet before the knockout rounds and stressed that several clubs remain capable of competing for the trophy.

The tactical contest is expected to place considerable emphasis on possession, with both managers favouring proactive football and structured attacking play.

For PSG, restricting Yamal's involvement could be particularly important because of his ability to create scoring opportunities from wide positions.

However, Enrique's recognition of Raphinha, Pedri and other Barcelona players underlines the difficulty of focusing defensive attention on a single individual.

Barcelona, meanwhile, will attempt to maintain their unbeaten start against a PSG side seeking to build on its European performances.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 9pm local time in Paris, equivalent to 8pm in the United Kingdom.

With both teams pursuing another positive Champions League result, Enrique's comments suggest that PSG will prioritise collective organisation and ball retention as they attempt to contain Barcelona's attacking quality.
