The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused security agencies of interfering in the August 16 by-election in Zamfara State, describing the exercise as being marred by voter intimidation.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election inconclusive due to alleged irregularities. INEC has since scheduled a supplementary election for August 21 in affected polling units within the Kaura Namoda South constituency.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Debo Ologunagba, PDP spokesperson, claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) used security operatives to disrupt voting, preventing citizens from freely exercising their rights. He cited photographs and videos from polling units showing incidents of harassment of voters and ballot box snatching.
Ologunagba alleged that the PDP had actually won the election before it was declared inconclusive. He further claimed that heavy military and paramilitary deployment ahead of the supplementary poll is intended to instill fear, intimidate voters, and influence the election outcome in favour of the APC.
“This nefarious deployment aims to foist a siege mentality on the people of the constituency, intimidate, terrorise, and prevent them from coming out to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed right to vote, having realised that the people of Zamfara state have soundly rejected the APC,” Ologunagba stated.
The PDP spokesperson called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately halt the alleged plan to militarise the supplementary election. He also warned that the party will not accept any results that do not reflect the aspirations of the people of Zamfara State.
