The Bayelsa State Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, under the leadership of Hon. Commissioner Dr. Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, on Saturday, 23rd August 2025, took its statewide sensitization tour to Ekeremor Local Government Area, in partnership with the Council Chairman, Hon. Onniye Isaac A.
This initiative, in line with the directive of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, aims to strengthen safety practices across waterways while ensuring the protection of lives and property.
During the campaign, the ministry’s team distributed life jackets to boat operators and commuters while stressing the uncompromising rule:
“No Life Jacket, No Boat Entry.”
The Commissioner emphasized that the sensitization is part of government’s broader vision to reduce water-related accidents, safeguard riverine communities, and instill a safety-first culture among residents.
The exercise enjoyed robust collaboration with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), the Nigerian Police, and the Maritime Workers Union, ensuring effective enforcement of the safety guidelines.
“This is about saving lives. Every passenger must see life jackets as a right, not a privilege. Our waterways must be safe for all,” Dr. Zibs-Godwin stated.
The sensitization tour is part of ongoing efforts by the Bayelsa State Government to promote sustainable marine transport, improve standards of waterway operations, and build confidence in the state’s growing Blue Economy sector.
By strengthening regulation, expanding awareness, and prioritizing safety, Bayelsa is setting a strong model for riverine governance and community protection in Nigeria’s coastal regions.
