Bayelsa Govt Orders Security Beef-Up in Letugbene, Ogbotubo Over Boundary Dispute

The Bayelsa State Government has directed the Nigerian Police and other security agencies to intensify security surveillance in Letugbene and Ogbotubo communities of Ekeremor Local Government Area to prevent further violence and destruction of lives and property.

The directive was issued by the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, during a meeting with community leaders and senior government officials at Government House, Yenagoa, on Thursday.

According to him, the move became necessary following renewed clashes between the two neighbouring communities over ownership of land where the Renaissance Africa Energy Company (formerly Shell) sited a project.

Ewhrudjakpo urged both communities to preserve their long-standing cordial relationship and resist attempts by oil companies to fuel division for selfish gains.

“Government will hold the leadership of both communities — including CDC chairmen and youth presidents — directly responsible for any further violence in the area,” the Deputy Governor warned.

To resolve the lingering dispute, the government inaugurated an 11-man Letugbene/Ogbotubo Boundary Dispute Resolution Committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr. Perepuighe Biewari.

The committee, which has one month to complete its work, is tasked with reviewing community claims, including previous court judgments and agreements.

The Bayelsa Government reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence and stability in Ekeremor LGA, urging both Letugbene and Ogbotubo to cooperate fully with the committee.

The Deputy Governor emphasized that sustainable peace, rather than conflict, will ensure development projects benefit the communities equitably.
