Minister of State for Housing Reconstitutes National Building Code Advisory Committee to Strengthen Safety Standards

The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Attah, has inaugurated a 21-member committee on the National Building Code Advisory, aimed at ensuring safety, durability, and professionalism across Nigeria’s construction industry.

The reconstituted committee includes registered professionals, representatives from key institutions, NGOs, and one representative from each geopolitical zone. In his address on Thursday, August 28, 2025, Hon. Attah described the inauguration as a decisive step to reposition the Nigerian building sector on a foundation of standards, regulations, and accountability.

“By inaugurating this Committee, we are demonstrating our determination to ensure that every Nigerian home, office, school, hospital, and place of assembly is built to specifications that guarantee safety, durability, and sustainability,” the Minister stated.

Hon. Attah emphasized that the National Building Code provides minimum standards for pre-design, design, construction, and maintenance stages. He highlighted that the Code, first signed into law in 2006, had faced slow progress due to challenges in ratification, enforcement, and compliance. The newly reconstituted committee, he explained, would oversee periodic reviews, guide technical subcommittees, and report quarterly on progress and recommendations.

The Minister warned that the assignment must be treated with utmost seriousness, stressing that Nigerians expect results. He encouraged committee members to bring their professional expertise, integrity, and patriotic commitment to safeguard lives, ensure resilient infrastructure, and foster sustainable urban development.

In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, represented by Director Public Buildings, Qs Pemi Temitope, emphasized that the code provides a unifying framework to guide construction and maintenance across the country, supporting the government’s mandate to deliver safe and affordable housing.

Committee Chairman, Arc. Mohammed Faworaja, assured the Minister of the committee’s commitment to diligent and professional service, including promoting the domestication of the code in states to suit local needs.
