The Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, Iyun, Surulere, now hosts a state-of-the-art Nephrology and Dialysis Centre, providing Lagos residents with access to advanced kidney care.

The Head of Nephrology Unit, Dr. Busari Abdulwasiu Adebiyi, confirmed that the centre was established by the Lagos State Government to offer affordable, technically-driven nephrology care, dialysis services, and renal transplantation, in line with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the present administration.

Dr. Busari, a specialist with extensive experience in clinical nephrology and dialysis services, explained that the centre aims to treat about 20,000 Lagosians living with chronic kidney disease, reducing the strain on tertiary hospitals like LUTH. The facility will also focus on preventive care and early intervention for high-risk groups, including hypertensive and diabetic patients.

Highlighting operational challenges, Dr. Busari noted a shortage of skilled manpower due to migration of healthcare professionals abroad. He stressed the importance of impactful training and retraining for doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health workers to ensure high-quality nephrology care.

On infrastructure, he praised the hospital management for providing standby generators and solar power backup, which will be upgraded as services expand. Dr. Busari also urged greater incorporation of dialysis into the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme (LASHMA) to reduce out-of-pocket costs and improve patient survival.

Since its launch, the centre has handled over 400 nephrology referrals and completed multiple dialysis sessions for patients with both acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, with numbers steadily increasing due to awareness creation.

In a move to make treatment more accessible, the hospital is subsidising the first 100 dialysis sessions, reflecting the state government’s commitment to reducing healthcare costs.

Dr. Busari commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising quality healthcare, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila for donating the hospital, the State Health Service Commission for leadership, and the Medical Director, Dr. Olumide Sojinrin, along with staff for their dedication in making the new department a reality.
