In a landmark initiative, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has officially launched the enrollment of inmates at state correctional facilities into the Osun Health Insurance Scheme (OHIS), reinforcing his administration’s commitment to inclusive healthcare.

The ceremony, held at the Ilesa Medium Correctional Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Services, saw Governor Adeleke describing inmates as bona fide citizens whose healthcare and well-being remain a priority. The Governor emphasized that his administration does not discriminate on the basis of political affiliation, tribe, religion, or gender.

Governor Adeleke highlighted past initiatives, including the free enrollment of over 26,000 pensioners and persons living with disabilities into OHIS, provision of life support equipment, and eye screenings for over 450,000 students in public schools. He said these programs have relieved parents financially while ensuring access to essential health services.

“We extend our healthcare coverage to inmates of correctional centres as a demonstration of our concern for the health and wellbeing of every segment of our society,” Governor Adeleke stated, noting that the state’s internally generated revenue and prudent financial management have made these interventions possible despite budgetary constraints.

Special Adviser on Public Health, Dr. Adekunle Akindele, described Governor Adeleke as a trailblazer whose policies are often emulated by the Federal Government, particularly in pensioner enrollment and the renovation of primary healthcare centres.

Controller of Corrections, Osun Command, Olalekan Rotimi Oluwadele, expressed gratitude for the Governor’s support, citing prior gestures such as granting amnesty to 54 inmates, renovating operational vehicles, and sending a state delegation to assist during security incidents.

The Executive Secretary of Osun Health Insurance Agency, Dr. Rasaq Akintunde Akindele, also lauded the Governor’s unwavering backing, noting that OHIS’s success is a direct result of his administration’s support.

Dignitaries present at the event included Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, several state commissioners, traditional rulers led by Oba Oyebade Oyeleye, and other prominent stakeholders.

The initiative underscores Governor Adeleke’s inclusive governance approach, ensuring that even the most vulnerable in society, including inmates, have access to quality healthcare services.
