The federal government’s drive to support flood victims in northern Nigeria received a major boost on Wednesday as the Chinese government donated $1 million to aid relief efforts.
The signing of the financial support exchange notes took place in Abuja between Senator Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, and the Chinese Ambassador, Mr. Yu Dunhai. Senator Bagudu expressed gratitude for China’s humanitarian gesture, describing it as a reflection of the growing bilateral cooperation in trade, infrastructure, technology, agriculture, and disaster relief.
“This timely intervention will complement ongoing government efforts to provide relief materials and rebuild livelihoods for affected communities,” Bagudu stated, adding that the grant would be managed transparently to ensure maximum impact. He also welcomed a joint monitoring and evaluation mechanism agreed upon with the Chinese Embassy to oversee the proper distribution of the funds.
Ambassador Dunhai expressed solidarity with Nigeria, recalling that both nations recently experienced devastating flooding. “In times of difficulty, China and Nigeria always stand together,” he said. The ambassador also noted that the aid underscores China’s confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to recover and rebuild under strong federal leadership.
The grant targets communities most affected by the floods, including Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa states, enhancing ongoing relief operations and supporting the restoration of livelihoods. Ambassador Dunhai further highlighted the broader bilateral relationship, including recent zero-tariff treatment for Nigerian exports to China, which is expected to boost trade, create jobs, and foster economic development.
