The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to property owners and developers flouting Abuja’s land use regulations, following a committee report highlighting challenges in traffic control, power supply, and waste management in various neighbourhoods.
Wike stressed that holders of undeveloped plots in the Central Business District and Sector Centres within Phase II must commence development within three months or face revocation of their titles. The Minister emphasized that Abuja’s designated residential, commercial, and mixed-use areas must be respected, cautioning against arbitrary conversions that violate city planning regulations.
“I’m aware that certain areas are designated for residential and others for commercial, but people believe they can do anything without approval, converting residential to commercial, commercial to residential, and all kinds of mixed uses. If you don’t sanction them, it will continue,” Wike declared. He added that strict sanctions, including withdrawal of titles, would be applied to ensure compliance.
The Minister’s directive underscores the FCT administration’s commitment to orderly urban planning, infrastructure improvement, and the enforcement of existing laws to maintain the integrity and functionality of Nigeria’s capital city.
